City Council Action Wrap-Up
Council fills aquatic center funding gap with hotel-motel tax funds.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, November 17, City Council voted to fill the $6.1 million funding gap necessary to build the aquatic center at the Greensboro Coliseum with existing and future hotel-motel tax funds.

The total cost to construct the center is $16.7 million. The large majority of it will be funded with a $12 million voter-approved bond, $1.4 million of which has already been used for the center's design.

After some Council members expressed concern about funding for other Coliseum projects, Council called a special meeting for Tuesday, December 1, at 4 pm, before its regularly scheduled meeting, to conduct a public hearing on financing improvements to the Greensboro War Memorial Coliseum Complex and discuss other Coliseum-related matters. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers of the Melvin Municipal Office Building, 300 W. Washington St.

Council also:
  • Approved giving an economic development incentive grant of up to $373,000 to Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings, also called LabCorp, for moving its billing operations to Greensboro. Greensboro is competing against several other cities for the new site. If Greensboro is selected, 373 new jobs will be created in the area.
  • Denied a zoning from residential single family to residential multi-family for property located at 2207-2209 N. Elm St. and 106-108 W. Cornwallis Dr. after residents in those neighborhoods expressed concerns and submitted a valid protest petition. This marked the first time that Council has voted on a protest petition since it granted back the right to citizens in March of this year.

Jump Start the Holidays with Festival of Lights
The annual event helps community get in the holiday spirit.

Kick-off your holiday season with the 21st annual Festival of Lights on Friday, December 4, from 5:45-9 pm in downtown Greensboro. This year's event features a musical stroll through downtown, more than 20 different musical groups including NC Agricultural & Technical State University's Gospel Choir, a variety of activities for adults and kids and, of course, the lighting of the city's Christmas tree. 'Santa' will also be on hand and staff of the Greensboro Public Library will read holiday stories.

In addition, downtown shops and galleries will be decorated in their holiday best and restaurants will be open for festival goers.

Winter Weather Preparedness
Keep yourself and your family safe and warm this winter.

Prepare now for winter weather. With winter around the corner, now is the time to make sure you and your family are prepared for the unpredictability that colder weather brings. Take the following precautions to keep you and your loved ones safe (and warm) this winter:

Prepare your home:
  • Prepare for possible isolation in your home by having sufficient heating fuel in case regular fuel sources are cut off. For example, store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for a fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  • Protect pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic, and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing.
  • Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts.
Prepare your vehicle:
  •  Gas level - maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season.
  • Windshield wiper equipment- repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid levels.
  • Tires - make sure your tires have adequate tread.
Prepare yourself:
  •  Wear several layers of loose fitting lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. The outer garments should be tightly woven and water-resistant.
  • Choose mittens instead of gloves because they keep your hands warmer.
  • Wear a hat because your body loses heat from your head.
