Please take some time to read up on candidates, cast your vote this November, and then band together with your neighbors to check up on those elected officials every now and then. Today, I've included some helpful links for the election - voting starts October 18th! In the coming months, we're going to highlight ways and provide information on how to check up on your public servants comfortably. (You might have to stretch your legs or writing hand once or twice though!)
For now... Respond to the hype: Participate.

Cooking Oil into Biofuel at the State Fair This Weekend

Saturday/Sunday, October 2nd/3rd, 10:00am to 3:00pm
Dallas Water Utilities "Cease the Grease" program is sponsoring a series of demonstrations this weekend on how used cooking oil is processed into biofuel.  The demonstrations will be held at the Mundo Latino Pavilion located at the Museum of Nature and Science at the State Fair both Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm.
Jennifer Simpson, an upper school science teacher at Hockaday School of Dallas, will show fairgoers the three-step process of making biofuel from used household cooking oil.  As an educator, innovator and scientist, Jennifer brings a festive approach to learning chemistry by blending style, intelligence and key subject matter. Her self-designed program, "Get a 'KIC' out of Science: An Innovative Strategy to Attract Students to Chemistry" demonstrates how science curriculum should be applicable and meaningful for today's youth. Her work has garnered numerous accolades including an appearance in O: The Oprah Magazine and a grant from the Jordan Fundamentals Schools, Inc.

Metromorphosis IV Symposium
Thursday, November 4th, starting 8:00am
The Greater Dallas Planning Council is conducting its 4th Metromorphosis Symposium on November 4th, 2010. This year's symposium focuses on Dallas' post-recession renaissance and emergence as a global city. Many economists believe the current national and world-wide recession marks profound structural changes that are realigning social, economic and political systems. New geographic centers of power are forming and in the coming decades, there will be strong competition among major metropolitan areas for dominance and global influence.
Metromorphosis IV will feature prominent national and local speakers discussing 21st Century economic, resource and demographic trends shaping the recovery and the strategic actions required by our region's governmental, business and civic leaders to position Dallas for the future.
