Dear Progressives,
It was an interesting Sunday evening this week, eh? I'm thankful that Congress finally passed another hurdle in passing health care reform legislation that was long overdue. There's a tempatation to get sucked into all the hullabaloo that this historic act will generate, but we've all got other priorities to manage and this is squarely in our congressional representatives hands now.
I know we've harped on you about local elections almost as as Organizing For America hounded people to work the phones for health care reform. The difference is that these votes in local elections cannot be delayed by filibustering, and the effect of these votes will be felt long before 2014.
Coming up in a few weeks are the runoff elections for several important races in many counties around Texas. We get a week of early voting the first full week of April, culminating on Runoff Election Day on April 13th. We also have municipal races (frequently non-partisan) that are coming up, culminating on May 8th. The hits keep coming, huh? Imagine if you were a candidate or a campaign worker right now. There's a constant anxiety that not enough of you will take 20 minutes out of your day during early voting to participate. On April 1st and May 1st, check out your local county's board of elections website (or call them!) and pencil in a side trip during early voting to the most convenient polling station. Make the politicos worry about TOO MANY people voting rather than too few to really represent the will of the people.
Be Well, and Be Progressive!
Events at The Progressive Center:
Coffee Party Meeting - Central Dallas Saturday, March 27th, 2:00pm to 4:00pm
The Progressive Center at South Side on Lamar is happy to be one of the host locations for this new experiment in activism, The Coffee Party!
From the organizer, Casey Lloyd: As a grassroots idea, our group will only grow if we show up to take care of it. With that in mind, the next meeting is set and here's what we want from you:
- Three topics you would like to have discussed
- Bring a friend to a Coffee Party program
The three topics can be anything you want to talk about. Per discussions with other groups, if you raise facts, please be ready to show where the sources are. Otherwise the field is wide open.
Coffee always tastes better with friends! Accept the challenge of bringing in someone who has either given up on politics, cannot believe we can agree to disagree and still remain friendly, or is brand new to politics! Let's ensure that Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and Undecideds have a place at our table. Again, we cannot thank y'all enough for such an incredible response to our first Saturday meetings, and I look forward to hearing from y'all on ideas for this time for our second meetings.
