Dear Progressives,
David Plouffe
Some of you may not remember that The Progressive Center of Texas here in Dallas grew out of the energy, relationships, and philosophy that manifested in 2007-2008 as ObamaDallas, one of the premier grassroots Obama groups in the country. Molly Hanchey, co-founder of both ObamaDallas and The Progressive Center, was one of the first to see the full promise in a certain young U.S. Senator, believing whole-heartedly that Barack Obama was going to be our next President. One of the few in 2007 that would have joined her just as enthusiastically would be David Plouffe, Obama's campaign manager. We're especially excited to be co-hosts as David Plouffe comes to Dallas in an exclusive engagement to talk about the 2008 campaign, the future of campaigning/organizing, and sign copies of his new book, The Audacity of Winning.

Check out this YouTube clip of David Plouffe.

Please join us on Monday, November 9th as we welcome David Plouffe to Dallas in the new, exclusive event space at Mockingbird Station, Deux
, between the Angelika cinema and Trinity Hall. Check out the details further down this email and email your RSVP today!

There's still early voting going on every day until October 30th, with the final Election Day being November 3rd! Check out the links below for our local board of election websites in the DFW area, and the Dallas League of Women Voters website where they've produced a voter's guide for your reading and voting pleasure.

Everybody might as well bookmark their board of elections websites right now, because we've got the 2010 primaries in March, and it looks like we'll have a free-for-all special election in May for an empty U.S. Senate seat here in Texas. 2010?!? YES! 2009 is almost over and 2010 going to be a big year as the Democrats and Republicans duke it out for dominance as we begin local and national redistricting in just a little over a year. Here are the board of elections website links for the big counties in our immediate area:

The Audacity of Winning - David Plouffe
Monday, November 9th - 6:00pm to 8:00pm
The Progressive Center of Texas is partnering with The Dallas Democratic Forum to host a lecture and book-signing event for David Plouffe, President Obama's former campaign manager, and his new book, The Audacity of Winning. David Plouffe worked on several successful Congressional campaigns through the 1990's before going into the private sector doing media messaging. Beginning in 2003, Plouffe and fellow AKP&D partner David Axelrod worked on Barack Obama's 2004 Illinois Senate campaign, beginning his association with Obama. Plouffe worked with Axelrod on the successful 2006 campaign of Deval Patrick for Governor of Massachusetts. After winning the election on November 4, Obama credited Plouffe in his acceptance speech, calling him "the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the ...best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America."

Plouffe will be sharing stories from the 2008 campaign and speaking about the campaign strategies developed to create the most innovative campaign in decades - setting the gold standard for campaigning in the 21st century.

Join us at Deux, the new, exclusive event center in Mockingbird Station. We look forward to introducing all of you to this exciting new venue in Dallas. It is right on the rails at Mockingbird Station, and as an added bonus several restaurants are offering discounts to those who attend our lecture and book signing. We want to thank John Mabry, owner of Deux, for his generous offer to help us make this a spectacular event for David Plouffe and you before his grand opening.

ONE YEAR AGO
Wednesday, November 4th,  starting at 6:30pm
It's coming up on one year since we finished the first stage of our journey, our commitment to making this a more perfect union. We made new friends and rediscovered old acquaintances almost forgotten. Our work in the community is far from over, but it's important to take stock of where we were just a year ago and celebrate!
Your local Organizing For America chapter in Dallas and many other activist leaders in the community invite you to join them for a commemorative social event on Wednesday, November 4th, celebrating the election of Barack Obama as our 44th President of the United States. The party is at Poor David's Pub (1313 S Lamar St, Dallas) starting at 6:30pm. It's mostly a no-frills event, so loosen up, throw on a piece of Obama gear, and be ready to share your tall tales from last year! They're collecting can goods for the local food pantries, so bring a couple of those, too, if you could. See you there!

CRUDE: a film by Joe Berlinger
starting Friday, November 6th - one week only!
"A fascinating and important story. CRUDE does an extraordinary job of merging journalism and art." -Christiane Amanpour, CNN Chief International Correspondent
The inside story of the infamous "Amazon Chernobyl" case, Crude is a real-life high stakes legal drama, set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Cameras rolled as the conflict raged in and out of court, and landed on the cover of Vanity Fair. Some of the film's subjects sparked further controversy as they won a CNN "Hero" award and the Goldman Award, the environmental equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
