Dear Progressives,

The showcase event this week in our eyes - besides President Obama's speeches on health care reform, of course - is the Green The Block events this Friday. Green The Block was created as part of the United We Serve project initiated by President Obama, in part to rethink the legacy of September 11th. Understandably, much time and energy has been spent looking back to grieve over the losses from that day. After several years, however, there's a movement to reclaim that day from anger and sorrow, using that anniversary to look forward and build a better nation. These local events are just a few of the opportunities around the nation to come together and work with common cause through the fellowship of local activism.

We at The Progressive Center are very pleased to partner with other local and national organizations to facilitate this positive, constructive option to honor the collective hardship that spun out of that day, years ago. You can find out more at http://greentheblock.net/ Look up these and other events in your area and sign up!

Hey, don't forget our second back-to-school forum this Saturday morning, focused on the status of Dallas county's afterschool programs, nor the ongoing Committee for the Restoration of Democracy in Honduras meeting this Tuesday night at 7pm (brought to us via partnership with the Dallas Peace Center).

Green the Block Dallas is a grassroots partnership between Hip Hop Government, The Institute for Urban Policy Research at University of Texas - Dallas, and The Progressive Center of Texas. This event is supported by US Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. The mission of this project is to increase the awareness of disadvantage neighborhoods, on governmental programs supporting the environment. Volunteers will conduct a pre-inspection of homes to assess eligibility in the Dallas County Weatherization program. Over 500 homes throughout the 30th Congressional District have been pre-identified to receive this assistance.

Working with volunteers and neighborhood associations, this event will not only educate, residents will be given an arrangement of tools to help them save energy.
