Dear Progressives,
Thanks
to everyone who participated in the health reform rally at Dealey
Plaza on Saturday. It was great to see people from all over town come
together on a sweltering late morning, and the coverage is at
the Dallas Morning News. Naturally, commenters want to think anyone who
wants health reform is a paid shill from ACORN - we know that's
patently untrue and silly to boot.
We
also had a fascinating group come together earlier that morning for
Claudia's Coffee and Conversation series event, and there will more
to say about that in the coming weeks.
Here
at the Progressive Center, we've got a couple of events this week
that we hope you'll attend. Tomorrow night is a discussion panel on
the recent growing instability in Honduras and what it means to us
here. Also, on Friday evening we're having a big discussion on "urban
environmentalism". Houston Mayor Bill White and Canadian Trade
Representative Laura Aune are sharing their success stories and
gearing up for a dialogue with you on what can be done in the D/FW
area. Check out the details below.
By the way, we're teaming up in November with the Dallas Democratic Forum for a book-signing at the Angelika - Mockingbird Station. The author is David Plouffe, campaign strategist for President Obama. You're fired up and ready to go for that, right? More details for you in the coming weeks...
Be Well, and Be
Progressive!

Upcoming
events at The Progressive Center of Texas are:
Honduras
Panel Discussion Tuesday, July 28th 6:30pm check-in,
7:00pm to 8:30pm Lon Burnam, Director of the Dallas
Peace Center, will moderate a panel discussion on democracy in
Honduras. The situation has apparently grown close to a civil war;
consequently all who love peace are seeking solutions to the burning
problems there. Peace activists are being asked to bring as much
verifiable information as possible to the activity. Among the
panelists are Dallas peace activist Gene
Lantz, and Margarita Alvarez and Ricard
Ventura, Central American activists.
Newspersons are invited.
Urban
Environmentalism: Sharing Sustainable Progress Friday,
July 31st 6:30pm (come early!) Houston Mayor Bill
White and Laura Aune, Trade Commissioner,
Canadian Consulate General - Dallas are our honored guests and
speakers. Mayor White, former U.S. Deputy
Secretary of Energy, is designated one of America's "Greenest
Mayors." He made Houston the nation's leading purchaser of
renewable energy and cut energy consumption by 6% during double digit
economic growth. Mrs. Aune has a mission to see
Dallas reduce auto emissions by developing walkable and affordable
neighborhoods. She recently returned from guiding a delegation
from Dallas including Mayor Tom Leppert to explore Toronto's best
case walkable neighborhoods. The DFW area
began to shift to more sustainable growth years ago, but we can
always use fresh perspectives and solutions so that our continuing
population boom doesn't overwhelm us financially or environmentally.
