Dear Members & Friends:
As we launch headlong into summer, it appears that the visitors just keep coming. We know it is traditionally a slower time for the tourism industry in our city, but it has been picking up each year since Katrina. This year should be the same. Gas costs are up over last year, but AAA advises that people are still traveling and we are very popular destination for the discretionary tourist. Our concerns in the French Quarter is impressing them once they get here with increased cleanliness, hospitality, and any variety of experiences that will keep them coming back to our city.
Here is an excerpt of a comment we received recently from a Mexican Travel & Food Writer "I just wanted to take a little time to thank all of you for the great hospitality and warmth I received last week on my trip to N.O. It is definitely one of the most beautiful and warm (literally) places I have ever been to. As a travel writer, I have visited more than 50 countries, but the welcome, the food, the sights, the happiness and the smiling faces I have experienced in N.O. last week, are definitely unique. I will be promoting N.O. in my magazines and on my radio show as often as I can. I want every reader I have, and every radio listener that listens to my radio program, to know about New Orleans and its delightful and happy people, its great gastronomy, it's fantastic galleries, the incredible music, and the list goes on and on. Thank you again for letting me be a part of New Orleans, even if it was just for a few days. It was worth it and I will definitely be back."
On the hospitality front, I was personally excited to see a new non-profit training program for service personnel. It is called Serving Up! Brighter Futures though the Fine Art of Service (501-c-3). Guided by New Orleans native Tyronne Howard, this 12 week course could prove to be the training ground for upward bound service personnel.
Our very own Graffiti teams are helping with the cleanliness of the Quarter and we anticipate a few more clean sweeps through the Quarter between now and the action packed sporting event season coming to us in late 2011 & early 2012. Watch for the next street event and give us a couple hours of work for a great result. We love family involvement or make it a team building experience!
We know that the Quarter has an experience to fit every visitor and local. The New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau advises us "New Orleans enjoys a strong repeat customer base which can be a challenge for some businesses. It is important to let visitors know why they should experience their attraction or business again. They will come back if they are given exciting reasons." Kim Priez, Vice President of Tourism, New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Let's continue to stand out as the gem in a great city.

Next up is getting the word out on sidewalk repairs. After taking a poll last year, one of the areas of concern in the French Quarter was the deplorable condition of our sidewalks. Our government affairs committee has sent our City Council a letter stating our position on repairs. On the PR committee's agenda is getting the public involved. If you own the property that the sidewalk is in front of, you are responsible for repairs. If there is an issues caused by another entity, be certain to report it.
send it our way.
