Tales

Dear Members & Friends:

It's that time of year that when they refer to New Orleans as Hot Hot Hot!!!   But they are not referring to our people, our music or even our Cajun Cuisine.  As the temperatures rise, we all begin to take life slow and easy.  But be assured that the heat won't keep your organization from being incredibly busy on your behalf.  From the fabulous June lunch forum at G.W. Fins, to the Membership Mixer at Latrobe's there is never a lack of things planned to get you out and keep you informed.

The Governmental Affairs Committee is hot on the trail of sidewalk repairs, redistricting, the sound ordinance and much more.  Those committee members spend as much time in meetings, hearings, and the State-of-Whatever Forums that you can wonder when they get much sleep, while the P.R. committee is on the front burner to get the information back out to all interested parties.

P.R. efforts proved a success at the Community Donation Press Conference (Bike Patrol) with representatives from multiple media outlets and members of the community.  And if you missed it, the FQBA spearheaded the drive to purchadriennease bikes for the NOPD 8th District Bike Patrol Unit, as you will see below. Our members took up the challenge and raised enough for all ten bikes, some uniform assistance and the first bike to kick off the purchase for the NOPD 1st District.

Despite warmer weather, the Graffiti Abatement Task Force rounded up volunteers and struck out to cleanse the Quarter of stickers, tags, and random stencils on public property.  It was a great mix of our business members, their spouses and children, and residents.  Evidently the family that anti-graffiti's together, stays together!

One last sign of the summer is the fabulous 3rd year of the "Getaway in the Vieux Carre" promotion produced by the Marketing Committee.  Spread the word to friends, family, and work associates that the French Quarter can be their summer adventure - go to FQBA.org and register today!

Sincerely,
Adrienne Thomas
FQBA President 2011

FQBA Announced a Community Donation of Bicycles to the 8th & 1st District

The Request, Donation & ChallengeCm. Kristin Gisleson Palmer
Early this year, Councilmember Gisleson Palmer requested support from the community to find the means to financially support a new NOPD 8th District Bike Patrol Unit along with other police districts around the city. The goal was 10 bicycles per NOPD district.   The French Quarter Business Association worked with its members to sponsor the bicycles for the 8th District and is proud to spearhead a drive for other community groups to support police in their district.

Sponsors from the FQBA membership for the 8th District Bike Patrol Unit are Acme Oyster House, Krystal on Bourbon, Muriel's Jackson Square, New Orleans Convention Company, Inc., New Orleans Musical donorsLegends Park, New Orleans Oyster Festival, Pat O'Brien's and Steamboat Natchez/Gray
 Line Tours.

Hopefully this challenge will be taken up by other community groups in an effort to improve community policing and create more neighborhood cohesion. The French Quarter Business Women's Network has donated the first of the 10 bicycle goal for the 1st District and is optimistic that other community groups will follow their lead.

Donations toward the bicycles should be sent to the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation, noting the NOPD Bicycle Unit and a specified district for the funds to be allocated accordingly.  The amount if the donation is tax deductible.

About the Bicycle Patrol Units
Across the country, Mountain Bike Patrols have proven effective in fighting crime and improving police/community relations.  Bike patrols enhance community policing by getting officers out of cars allowing them to engage the community personally and in a positive way.bike patrol
Quiet, cost efficient, and amazingly effective, mountain bikes are able to bridge the gap between automobiles and foot patrol.  Experience has shown that citizens are more likely to approach a bike patrol officer than even a neighborhood beat officer, optimizing community oriented or problem oriented policing efforts. Bicycle officers are better able to use all of their senses, including smell and hearing, to detect and address crime. Bike patrol officers are often able to approach suspects virtually unnoticed, even in full uniform.

Mountain bikes have proven effective in a number of different environments. They are swift and agile in busy urban areas where traffic snarls and crowds delay motorized units.  They can be operated on streets, sidewalks, alleys, and in any areas that are difficult to access with motor vehicles.

NOPD has 40 officers certified to ride Police Mountain Bikes and 2 officers certified as trainers by the  Police Mountain Bike Association.  Specialized training is critical because the officers may have to ride in extremely heavy traffic.   Police cyclists need the skills to ascend and descend curbs, stairs, and other obstacles.   Police cyclists also must know what tactics to use in a pursuit and how to dismount quickly but safely and perform an arrest.

The Press Announcement
Wednesday, June 1st at 10 a.m. in the courtyard of the 8th District at 334 Royal Street. Remarks were made by Adrienne Thomas, FQBA President, Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer, Superintendent Ronal Serpas, 8th District Commander Jeffery Walls, 1st District Commander Bobby Norton and Officer Orlando Mathews.
