Dear Members:

The Installation Dinner was a magnificent kick-off to a new year for French Quarter Business Association.  Although I had the opportunity to publicly thank the 2010 Board, Officers, and Executive Director, I want to share it with the whole membership in this newsletter.  Those people have unselfishly taken time from their work schedules to lead our organization toward a well recognized leadership organization in our city.  Please take a moment to thank them, especially Shelly Waguespack (President 2010), when you see them in the community.

This year we will focus strongly on establishing clear communications with our elected officials, residential organizations, our city council and department heads, and our membership.  We expect the communications will be a two way street.  Certainly we will not always see the same side of an issue but if we can see both sides we can make every effort to secure the best outcome.
Another goal for the coming year is to secure more businesses in our membership base.  If we are going to have a united voice on issues in our community we need everyone's input, and everyone's support.  So we want to reach those who aren't aware of all that we do, and those who have safely set back and said "let someone else fight our battles".    Ask your neighbor when they will join the FQBA!

As we organize our efforts for 2011 we would like to see more of our members involved in standing committees and in task forces like last year's Graffiti clean-up.  Watch our newsletters and the FQBA website and then raise your hand to volunteer.

I look forward to an exciting year for FQBA.

Sincerely,
Adrienne Thomas

NOPD Bike Units

In December, FQBA and other community groups were sent a message from Councilmember Gisleson Palmer's office requesting support for the NOPD Bicycle units that Chief Serpas plans to introduce in each police district.  This initiative is a part of the Chief's 65 point plan. This is a citywide initiative and each police district could benefit from support. In particular, Councilmember Gisleson Palmer and FQBA would like to help put the officers of the 8th District on bicycles.  The goal is to have 10 on the streets of the 8th District.  Her letter points out how the bicycles will help in the following ways:

- The open nature of the bicycle allows the officers to be in touch with their surroundings and more approachable by citizens; making it an important component of "community policing"
- The "stealth" advantage of the bicycle allows it to travel quietly, unnoticed by unwary criminals
- While traffic may be at a standstill during major events, bicycles can easily maneuver though crowded streets and patrol alleyways, parking lots and other areas inaccessible to patrol cars
- Finally, the cost of a patrol car is $20,000 or more, while the cost of a police bicycle is approximately $1000

Please consider donating to the NOPD Bikes Fund by contacting the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation (www.nopjf.org).  Donations made to this fund are tax deductible.  When making a donation please denote your police district and specifically mention "NOPD Bikes".  Any amount will be accepted and directed to the appropriate district and fund.

For more information you may contact the City Council District "C" Office at 658-1030 or the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation at 558-9944.

Jackson Square Task Force

presenting in City Council Chambers

Monday, January 7th

10 a.m.

On Monday, February 7, VCPORA director Meg Lousteau will go before the City Council's Governmental Affairs Committee to present the findings of the Jackson Square Task Force.  This group was convened by Councilwoman Kristin Gisleson Palmer after the NFL event in September, and represented a wide cross-section of residents, businesses, and institutions.   The presentation will include a PowerPoint and will highlight specific recommendations, such as:

-    A point person for special events in the city, which would benefit neighborhoods, businesses, and events-coordinators alike
-  24/7 security for Jackson Square -  the most iconic spot in our city is frequently without any formal security patrol
- a ban on electric amplification, which disturbs residents, businesses, visitors, as well as other performers
-  improvements in sanitation and infrastructure
-   licensing of tarot card readers using public space to conduct business

This meeting is open to the public, all are encouraged to attend and able to voice concerns about the protection and enhancement of Jackson Square.

For more information on the findings of the Task Force visit the VCPORA website.

*Thank you, VCPORA for the meeting reminder
