Fall is for Planting
It's officially September and most would consider this to be the start of Fall... the kids go back to school, the sun sets a bit earlier, and before you know it the leaves will be changing into their warm autumn colors. Personally it's my favorite time of year and I'm sure a bunch of you will agree. Some think now's the time to sit back and relax as you watch the garden go to sleep... but don't put those garden tools away just yet - there's work to be done! Fall Color
There are several "theories" on why trees actually drop their leaves each fall, some believe it is a result of natural evolution, a self defense system against insects and wildlife; seems a bit of a stretch to me. The truth of the matter is that available levels of light and water decrease to levels that are below what is required to maintain photosynthesis (plant food productions in the leaf). When day length decreases this triggers trees to prepare for winter and thus the reduction of foliage. Some plants lose all leaves while some, like evergreens, drop only a percentage of their foliage year to year. Click here to read more... |

September and October are an excellent time to plant fruit trees as well as other flowering and shade trees. As the air cools off in autumn, the soil continues to stay warm.
