Industry Bids Farewell To A Pair Of Luminaries Who Made Lasting Impressions On Racing

The racing industry lost a pair of pioneers late last month with the passing of Hoosier Racing Tires founder Robert "Bob" Newton (pictured) on September 26, followed by legendary journalist Chris Economaki two days later at the age of 91. Known as the Dean of American Motorsports Journalism, Economaki played a tremendous role in helping to popularize the sport of auto racing. Newton and his wife Joyce launched what would become Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. in an old abandoned horse barn in South Bend, Indiana, in 1957. It eventually became the world's largest race tire manufacturer.
