Transition Tidbits
Good afternoon, Listserv members! We hope your school year is off to a great start. Here are a few transition tidbits we thought might interest you:

(1) 2009 Youth Transition Conference:

The 2009 Montana Association for Rehabilitation/Youth Transition Conference - Three Legs of the Stool: Balance Equals Success - is being held at the War Bonnet Inn, Butte, Montana, October 7-9, 2009. The MT Association on Rehabilitation and MT Youth Transitions have joined together to present this opportunity for students and their support teams. Come network, learn together and explore. The conference includes keynote presenters and break-out sessions that focus on secondary transition issues and adult services. Office of Public Instruction renewal units are available, in addition to college credit. More information can be found at the following link:

Scholarships are available for youth with disabilities.

(2)  The Riot! Healthy Relationships Teleconference Series

Sign up now to participate in 2 teleconferences featuring real talk between self-advocates, family members and healthcare providers about intimate relationships, personal safety and advice from peers.  Speakers will tackle the tough questions that are on a lot of people's minds but many are afraid to talk about.

Each teleconference will last 90 minutes and will start at 3pm EASTERN TIME.

October 5th - What are the dynamics of a healthy, intimate relationship?  Issues of sexuality, personal safety and safe sex/birth control will be discussed.

November 2nd - Self-advocates give their peers advice, "Dear Abby" style.

The registration fee for each teleconference is $25.  You can listen on your own or bring people together around a speaker phone.  For more information or to register, click here.

(3) Emerging Leaders Wanted!
We are looking for examples of young people, age 18-30, in Montana who have a developmental disability according to the Montana definition and have creatively organized their supports to:
*  Live in the community (on their own or with family or  friends) and/or
*  Work in the community (including owning their own business) and/or
*  Access inclusive education (high school, college, trade school, community classes) and/or
*  Participate in recreation and leisure activities that are inclusive (that is, alongside people without disabilities)

We want examples of supports that have been creatively organized around the person, individualized to their interests and needs.  These supports can be organized and managed by a funded adult agency or family and friends.  We are also looking for examples of creative funding such as blended services and natural supports, use of Social Security Administration work incentives, privately funded services or traded or bartered supports.

To nominate yourself or someone you know as an Emerging Leader, visit the Rural Institute Transition Projects Web site for a brief nomination form and a consent form.
