Stranger & Traveler
The Call of Dorothea Dix
Sunday, January 29th, 10:30 am
January 29 - Stranger and Traveler - the vocation of Dorothea Dix -Join Rev. Jennifer and Worship Weaver Kate Connelly in their exploration of the life of one of our great Unitarian foremothers, Dorothea Dix. Come find out what Dorothea's passion, courage, and sheer stubborn brilliance has to teach us about our own desire to answer "the call".
And remember, our Mid-Year Meeting is today (1/29) after the service. Members and friends, please stay for this important chance to speak together as a community. (Our Sr. Youth will be selling a delicious and inexpensive lunch as a way to fundraise for the their 2012 Romanian Mission Trip - it's another great chance to talk to them about what they're up to and why they're so excited!) RE =
Thanks so much to all the children who participated in the Christmas evening service. Everyone was thrilled with your musical offering! Please plan to join Claudia on the last Sunday of every month during regular RE time and sing in the worship service on the first Sunday of every month.
RE Music will commence this Sunday, January 29, with all new songs for spring. We will continue to play the chimes and sing. Claudia would welcome a larger role for the 4th, 5th and 6th graders. When children of all ages sing and play together, we build a community. Singing in a community of friends is fun! Come!
Claudia Frost, Director of Music

Got Teenagers?
We do! One of the things Yarmouth First U is known for in our faith movement is our thriving youth program. This building fills up not only on Sunday mornings, but late Sunday afternoons and into the evenings when over 30 teenagers arrive here at their spiritual home to engage in Our Whole Lives, Coming of Age and Sr. Youth group. We invite you to pay special attention, for the next few months, to the Sr. Youth group. Here are some things coming up:
Mid-Year Meeting lunch
Sunday, January 29th right after the service. Stay for lunch and/or donate soups and breads, either way all proceeds go directly to the Sr. Youth 2012 Mission!
Valentine's Day treats
Beginning Sunday, January 29th and continuning into February
the Sr. Youth Group will be selling baked treats and beautiful gifts perfect for your loved ones on Valentine's Day - and conveniently located in the Gathering Room right after church!
Valentines Day babysitting Tuesday, February 14th. Go out and have fun while your kids stay here at the church and play with their friends, eat pizza and healthy snacks, and are lovingly cared for by our enthusiastic, game-loving, CPR certified teens. Sign-up sheet posted in the Gathering Room - don't delay!

Half Plate ~
More About the UUSC and Why It Deserves Our Support: Our half-plate collection this Sunday will again go to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), which is currently devoting donations like ours to defending the human right to water, championing civil rights in the Middle East, protecting workers rights in this country and abroad, and building sustainability with Haiti's earthquake survivors.
And, if one of these human rights challenges speaks to you, you may want to explore at www.uusc.org the UUSC's JustWorks service-learning program. Similar in part to the mission trips our own Senior Youth take each year, these are usually weeklong opportunities to work directly with people in places like Haiti, Uganda, and Guatemala, learning about human rights issues firsthand. The UUSC recognizes that advancing human rights is the work of many joining hands.
Be sure to bring your checkbook to church on Sunday and support the UUSC generously!

Guest At Your Table Boxes:
This will be the last announcement for the return of GAYT boxes, but late returns will never be turned away! The contents of boxes left in the office or sanctuary--at whatever point in time--will be forwarded to and put to good use by the UUSC.

FILM FORUM Friday, February 3
Save Friday night, February 3, for an evening starting with a potluck dinner at 6:00 and a documentary film in the Common Room at 7:00, or soon after. The documentary film, called WHICH WAY HOME? was nominated in 2010 for an Academy Award. It is an eye-opening account of three children attempting to travel alone from Central America, through Mexico and across the US border in hopes of finding family. It is appropriate for high-school youth, but not young children. We have chosen this film to introduce the theme of IMMIGRATION AS A MORAL ISSUE, which was chosen by the General Assembly of the UUA for study and action for the next few years. At the potluck supper we will have a special guest, ERIC HOLMAN, of Maine Migrant Health, who will share his insight and experience with the challenges faced by migrant farmworkers across our own state. All are welcome, but we encourage you to let Isabel Denham, Sue Kennedy, or Jane Makela know you are coming, to make our setup easier.

From Kate Connelly:
I am trying to find a place to hold a theatrical fundraiser for the church that will not charge for the use of the space. I need no sets, just a place that can be stage-lit for an evening performance. I also need someone who can make me a simple costume. If anyone can help or has any ideas please call me at 847 3141 or e-mail me at kathconn@maine.rr.com

Snow Shoveling for Church
The church and parsonage driveways are professionally plowed, but we rely on volunteers to clear the 5 church entrances. A sign-up sheet is posted in the Gathering Room. Please pick a day of the week that you could do this winter. I'll bring over my snow blower if it gets really deep. Let me know if you can't sign up for a day, but would be willing to be on a call list. Thanks, Pete Titcomb (846-4765)

Here's how we're going to handle storm closings this year at First U:
If Yarmouth has declared a village-wide ban on all street parking because of the weather, church is closed. You can find out about parking bans by watching the local weather on channels 6, 8 and 13 or by calling the Yarmouth police department - non-emergency number - 846-3333.
- If the Sunday service was going to rely heavily on children and youth involvement and there's been a massive amount of snow and ice overnight, the service is most likely cancelled and church closed. It's our policy not to put that kind of pressure on families to put their children in the car and drive in bad weather.
- We post all closings on Channel 8 by 7 a.m.
- If in doubt do not call the church phone, the outgoing message of which is nearly impossible to change on short notice and which won't be working anyway if the power is out.
- Do call Rev. Jennifer's cell phone and listen to the outgoing message. That number is 207/356.1467. Please do not leave a message if that's all you needed to know :)
- Please DO leave a message for Rev. Jennifer on her cell phone if you've lost power/heat and need assistance, including, perhaps, a warm place to be for the day!
Thank you - We're looking forward to a wonderful, safe winter together. Back to Top
