FILM FORUM
Save the date of January 6th!  That's Friday night at 7:00 pm.

The FILM FORUM of First Universalist Church will be showing a remarkable film about one of our most important Unitarian heroes - one who became a martyr, thanks to the Inquisition.

Michael Servetus is the hero of this film, called LONG STRANGE TRIP.  He was a scholar within the Catholic Church who questioned the Church's doctrines and was willing to debate anyone on this subject; however, that made him a hunted person who often had to change his name and move to a new place to save his life.  Besides arguing for a new interpretation of scripture, he practiced medicine and made important discoveries about the circulation of the blood and the action of the heart.  His books were burned with him at the stake, but a few survived so that we now know what he wrote.  You will be glad to have seen this film and will appreciate the sacrifices made so that we can believe as we do.

The FILM FORUM, sponsored by the Church Library and Denominational Connections Committee, will be a regular event on the first Friday of each month.  Plan to make it a regular event for you.
Faith-in-Action
Continuing Opportunity to Serve:  All aboard!
preble street

More chances to be part of our church's partnership with the  PREBLE ST. RESOURCE CENTER in Portland.

Your Faith in Action Council is pleased to report that our First Tuesday dinner service at the Preble St. Resource Center has been so successful that spaces to sign up were at a shortage.  Now is your chance to get on board.  Look for sign-up sheets on the bulletin board at the back of the Gathering Room (not at the front where they previously were posted). Those who have done it are agreed it is a rewarding experience.  The clients are appreciative and the Preble St. staff is highly organized and helpful at making us feel welcome and useful.

This is not only a chance to be of service to those who are less fortunate, but to do something for ourselves as well.  Joining together, we have a chance to make new friends with each other, and to deepen our commitment to UU values

The job does not include bringing food, but reporting for duty at 4:30 and staying till 7:30, following instructions from the Preble St. staff.  You are encouraged to commit to the entire 3 hours, but there is some flexibility for those who must come late or leave early.  Arrival anytime before 5:30 is acceptable.

To volunteer for the dinner service, check out the lists in the Gathering Room and look for empty spaces.  There are slots open every month from January on.  Or contactPhyllis Chinlund, 781-8842, chinlund@maine.rr.com or Melissa Innes 846-3877, melissawalshinnes@gmail.com.

The Clothing Closet volunteers are continuing their good works of sorting and shelving donations for 2 morning hours a month.  If you are interested in joining them contact Isabel Denham at 846-5931 or

Storm Closings at First Universalist
snowflake

It's that time of year - Bread Communion and family home for the long weekend; the Holiday Fair with lunch served by our wonderful Sr. Youth, and goodies and crafts made by all our talented congregants; children's voices getting ready for the Christmas Eve service...and storm closings messing up our chance to be in worship together. Aargh!

Well, that's part of the joy and reality of living in Maine. Here's how we're going to handle storm closings this year at First U:

If Yarmouth has declared a village-wide ban on all street parking because of the weather, church is closed. You can find out about parking bans by calling the Yarmouth police department - non-emergency number.

  • If the Sunday service was going to rely heavily on children and youth involvement and there's been a massive amount of snow and ice overnight, the service is most likely cancelled and church closed. It's our policy not to put that kind of pressure on families to put their children in the car and drive in bad weather.
  • We post all closings on Channel 8 by 7 a.m.
  • If in doubt do not call the church phone, the outgoing message of which is nearly impossible to change on short notice and which won't be working anyway if the power is out.
  • Do call Rev. Jennifer's cell phone and listen to the outgoing message. That number is 207/356.1467. Please do not leave a message if that's all you needed to know :)
  • Please DO leave a message for Rev. Jennifer on her cell phone if you've lost power/heat and need assistance, including, perhaps, a warm place to be for the day!
Thank you - We're looking forward to a wonderful, safe winter together.
