Welcome to Issue #3 of the Max Gladwell newsletter, a bi-weekly overview of stories that affect and shape our quality of life. You've been subscribed through some type of interaction with the blog or those who manage it (most likely Rob Reed). If you no longer wish to receive this newsletter, please feel free to unsubscribe via the link at the bottom of the email. If you choose to stay, here's what you can expect. The MG newsletter takes a slightly different approach to the blog. It is a media filter that provides information and insight about how our health and wellbeing (our quality of life) is being affected in so many different ways and what we can do about it. When it comes to managing quality of life issues, there is no single answer or solution. But staying informed and taking a holistic approach is key. It is not enough to reduce our carbon footprint or get in shape or become active in our communities. Like any system, the whole of our quality of life is greater than the sum of its parts. Which is why we take a much broader view of what it means to live green. Others have made a distinction by calling this BLUE living. However the semantics play out, what we mean is to live well and improve quality of life. That is the filter we apply. The result is what you see below. We hope you find it valuable and continue to subscribe. We also encourage you to explore "The MG Network" of social media sites and services. This can be found in the left column here, along with more options in the right column of the blog. All the best, Max Gladwell

Climate Change Bill Defeated in Senate
|
A landmark plan to fight climate change was defeated in the US
Senate, likely postponing action on carbon emissions limits until after
this autumn's presidential election. Neither Democrat Barack
Obama nor Republican John McCain cast votes on the climate bill but
indicated that they would have supported moving forward on it. McCain
had indicated previously that he would oppose the bill if more
incentives for nuclear power were not added. |

White House Acknowledges Human-Induced Global Warming
|

Since 1990, every four years the US government has been required to issue a "scientific" report on climate change
and its effects on the economy, environment, and public health. In
typical George W. Bush cavalier cowboy style, the 2004 deadline for
this report was ignored and the government was sued by green groups.
Finally, the long awaited report was released four years late, and get
this:
Most of the recent global warming is very likely due to human generated increases in greenhouse gas concentrations.
Very likely caused by humans-now that's a definitive statement on
climate change! Once again the US government has failed to make a
clearcut connection between humans and climate change. |

Apple Introduces iPhone 3G
|
No need to reference any other source than the original: "Introducing iPhone 3G. With fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping,
support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new
App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. And
like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one - a
revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet
device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser. iPhone 3G.
It redefines what a mobile phone can do - again." This is a game-changer. It's only $199, but you have to sign a 2-year contract, and the data plan is an extra $10/month. So you actually end up paying an extra $40. But it's well worth the WiFi-like data speeds. |

Text to Save Lives: Mobile Takes Off
|
Last month, both China and Myanmar suffered natural disasters of such
huge proportions that they received the attention of the world. The
combination of the quake and the cyclone left a death toll that is
today approaching 200,000, but has affected millions more. Many of us
have read the news but have been so caught up in our day-to-day lives
that we haven't been able to find time to give. However, new mobile
"text-to-give" services will help make charitable donations faster and
easier to do.

Greenies Also Techies
|
The environmental movement is one that has, lately, received a
rather large amount of attention. This is not solely because of the
contention about whether the global warming is as a result of man-made
greenhouse gases, but because of its subsequent timing with a
revolution on the internet.
New research from Mediamark Research and Intelligence has released
the results of a study, based on interviews conducted with
approximately 26,000 US adults, that suggests those 2% of people who
are self-described "Green Advocates" are also among the most tech savvy. |
