MESA FOOTBALL IS WAITING FOR YOU!!!

A Message from Steve Mensinger
President, Costa Mesa Pop Warner (CMPW)

Well we are fast approaching the end of the school year and the start of summer. Get ready for the start of our youth Football Season in Costa Mesa! Our 2008 season officially starts Friday, August 1st. This season promises to be a milestone year for Mesa Pop Warner. We will have a new look, new equipment, a new stadium and we are coming off one of the most successful local football seasons in recent years. I am excited to announce that we have moved our practice facility from Costa Mesa High School to a new facility at Estancia High School.  It is truly amazing to witness the evolution of our program from four years ago to today. Then, we had no home, and only few teams. This year we will field 300 children, practice at a "Pop Warner" home field, and play games at a $10 Million synthetic turf field--WOW!

I am also happy to report that we are quickly filling our rosters of teams for both Football and Cheer. If you know any families interested in Mesa Football this year, let them know to hurry and sign up now!  We are fast approaching capacity and we will be raising our registration fees on May 1st!

As the President of Costa Mesa Pop Warner, I have made a pledge to the parents and kids of our league that this will be a year to remember not only from the standpoint of change but as a reference point in the re-invigoration of pride in our community and in the oldest youth sports program in Costa Mesa. We are here to help our youth mature and grow through the experience of competitive sports; ultimately we are inspiring kids to be the best! My role is to exceed the expectation of every child and parent that entrusted me with the Pop Warner Football experience. Here's to a successful 2008 season - GO MESA!

Sincerely,

Steve Mensinger

 A Special Thanks...

All of us need to thank our community leaders for their valuable support this year. Our City Council led by Mayor Pro Tem Allan Mansoor and Council Member Wendy Leece have dedicated many hours of their time to attend meetings in support of Pop Warner. Council Member Katrina Foley helped us immensely in the acquisition of the Estancia facility, not to mention her commitment to youth sports all throughout Costa Mesa. Our school district, Newport Mesa Unified School District, has also been immensely supportive and helpful in the evolution and for that we are grateful.
The Way We Were
A Brief History of Costa Mesa Pop Warner

By Ed Baume, CMPW League Ambassador

Back in the early days of Costa Mesa Pop Warner (1960's), we weren't all MUSTANGS!  When we incorporated as a non-profit organization, we were CABALLOS, COLTS, COWBOYS, and later COMANCHES, CONDORS, CORSAIRS and even CHARGERS, CORONAS and COBRAS!  Carlo Tosti was our President, Auddrey Millican was Secretary, and the Board of Directors included Al Dies, Ralph Whitford, Jerry Tripp and Bob Gilbert.  These were some of our "Founding Fathers."

The Coaches in the 1960s included Al Dies (Caballos), Jerry Tripp and Bob Milum (Corsairs), Gary Valiere and Ron Stackman (Colts), Jim Grant (Comanches), Rolly Pulaski and Joe Brockman (Cowboys) and Bob Gilbert (Chargers).  We had Cheer Squads for the Cowboys, Commandos and Chargers during the 1969 season, so the girls started something!  Each Football team had its own doctor:  Drs. Pfaff, Parsel, Humphreys, Leroy and Treat to name a few.  Practices were held at Lions Park and TeWinkle Park; scrimmages sometimes at Newport Harbor High School behind the Varsity Field; games played on a Utility Field at TeWinkle Park or Costa Mesa High School.  Although we lived in a "gypsy-like" existence, we brought back many league and regional championships!

In the '60s both Steve and Gary Baume played for Coach Al Dies on the Caballos.  Both returned as adults to coach when Gary's sons entered the Pop Warner program; Gary, however, joined the Costa Mesa High School varsity staff in the 1990s.  Later in 2006, the entire male Baume family returned to Costa Mesa Pop Warner to coach the Jr. Midget team:  Gary as head coach, Steve as Equipment Manager, Dan as Offensive Coordinator, Sean as Defensive Coordinator and Ed as Player Administrator!  Ed had served as League President in the '90s, assisting in increasing the number of teams from three to five.

Things were so bad in the '90s when Dan and Sean joined, that Dan was moved "up" to the Pee Wee Team in order to have enough players qualify. The following year, he still qualified as Jr. Pee Wee!

This season -- 2008 -- Costa Mesa Pop Warner will field 9 teams:  1 Flag, 1 Jr. Mighty Mite, 1 Mighty Mite, 1 Jr. Pee Wee, 2 Pee Wee, 2 Jr. Midget and 1 Midget.  How exciting and fortunate to be involved with a program whose philosophy since 1929 has been "Academics and Athletics go hand in hand!"  The general objective of Pop Warner is to inspire youth to practice the ideals of sportsmanship, scholarship and physical fitness as reflected in the life of Glen Scobie "Pop" Warner.
