ANNUAL ELECTRONIC WASTE COLLECTION

Green Event at the FarmersMarket

Saturday, August 11|  8:00AM - 12:00PM

Village Hall Parking Lot, 2020 Chestnut Road

708-978-3000

The Village offers activities for eco-minded residents every month during the Farmers Market.  Saturday, August 11, ATEN will sponsor Electronic Waste Collection. ATEN, The Assistive Technology Exchange Network, refurbishes and recycles donated computers and distributes them to individuals with disabilities. This event starts at 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM.

On January 1, 2012 the IL Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act went into effect. All electronics have been banned from all 48 Illinois landfills and prohibited from being placed at curbside or in a waste container or recycling totes on collection day. Under the new law, Homewood Disposal and Skyline are no longer allowed to accept/dispose of electronic items. Electronics contain high amounts of toxic materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium that end up in landfills and eventually seep into the environment. However, unwanted electronics also have valuable reusable materials - copper, gold, plastic, glass circuit chips that are recovered and utilized.
