      POLICY FOR UNDOMESTICATED ANIMALS

If an undomesticted animal appears to be sick, or if the animal is causing an immediate problem inside of a residence, the Homewood Police Department will respond to a resident's call for service.

It is prohibited for the Police Department to pick up dead animals on private property and Public Works can only remove dead animals on Village property.

    1. Traps are available to loan from the Police Department.
    2. The traps can only be used inside a dwelling.  Conservation laws prohibit anyone, including the police, from trapping undomesticated animals "in the wild". Homeowners will be responsible for placement of traps and for placing the occupied trap on the driveway so that the Police Department can dispose of it.
    3. If there is an issue with an undomesticated animal out side of a resident's home, the Police Department will advise resident to either contact a licensed private pest control company or purchase a trap themselves.
    4. It is also advisable to make the area where the undomesticated animal is living or visiting "uncomfortable" for the animal and to close off those areas once the animal is gone.

Here are a few additional suggestions to keep undomesticated  animals away from your property:

    1. Spread mothballs throughout the area where the animal is residing or visiting.
    2. Animals do not enjoy flashing lights so set up flashing lights in the problem area (a string of flashing Christmas lights should work).
    3. Play music/talk radio on a portable radio in the problem area.

There are agencies available that can offer additional advice:

    •  Willowbrook Wildlife - DuPage County Forest Preserve
    • Little Red School House - Cook County Forest Preserve
