Drivin' the Dixie

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Driving the Dixie a one-hour car show, starting at 10:00 AM in the St. Paul Community Church Parking Lot, will be held in conjunction with the Art and Garden Street Fair. 

The Dixie Highway is a historic route in the United States, and in Illinois several groups come together every year to "Cruise" the Dixie from Blue Island to Momence. The event started in Homewood with the Homewood Heritage Committee and continues a decade later with a huge following, featuring classics from Model A Fords to anything from the present. Stops are made along the way in several of the cities and everyone has a great time while celebrating a piece of history.  Those seeking to participate (all are welcome) should contact Heritage Committee Chair Elaine Egdorf at (708) 798-9535; those wanting to view the cars should go to the St. Paul Parking Lot. The event is held in conjunction with the Art and Garden Street Fair.

Friday's format offers a lively, nighttime atmosphere with a full schedule of live entertainment & dance opportunities, featuring Rio Bamba (lyrics & melodies of Bossa Nova). Sip sangria & dine on festive foods served by Cilantro Cucino Restaurant & Aurelio's Pizza.

 

Saturday embodies all of the rich features of an outdoor, cultural experience for art admirers & buyers of all levels. Start the morning off with yoga outdoors by Reflections Yoga. The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra's Brass Quintet will perform during the day & Latin Satin Soul, a popular band at the Taste of Chicago, will close out the evening with music to move to.

Enjoy a beautiful day, strolling unique gardens in Flossmoor, Homewood, and Olympia Fields.Be inspired by the natural beauty and design of the gardens, as well as the interesting stories of how they were developed.  See the natural serenity of a Japanese garden with water features, a continuous flowering perennialsemi-shade garden, a cottage garden, a garden with 135 varieties of hostas, container gardens, a garden focusing on spring blooming shrubs, a garden designed by an artists and more.  Proceeds will benefit Aunt Martha's Youth Service Center and Respond Now. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on that day.  Advance tickets may be purchased at Sunnycrest Nursery. "Day of" tickets will be available at Goldberg Park in Flossmoor. July Fourth Independence Day Parade

The July Fourth Independence Day parade is a Homewood tradition that celebrates the birthday of our great nation and the many faces of our great community.  Thousands of friends and neighbors will gather along the parade route.  This year, lots of entertainment has been added in, such as stilt walkers, jugglers, clowns, bands, bagpipes, decorated floats, giant balloons, and horses to name a few.  The route starts at St. Joe's on Dixie Highway and travels east along Ridge Road, finishing up at Izaak Walton Preserve where the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District and Homewood Fire Department will host games and entertainment at the Family Fun Fest.  

July Fourth Float Participant

Application Deadline: Thursday, June 23

If you are a local service group, youth group, or not-for-profit, entering a decorated float into the parade is a memorable and excellent opportunity to showcase your cause/mission to the community.

For non-commercial entrants the fee is $15.00 (nonprofit organizations with a 501C, academic schools, veterans groups, local service groups, church groups, etc.), and for commercial entrants the fee is $30.00 (entrants that promote a commercial venture, or recognize any other entity, organizations, or business other than itself). 

To reserve a space in the parade lineup, complete and return a Homewood Parade Application . Enclose correct payment (checks only, made out to Village of Homewood). The application deadline is June 23. Parade applications may be dropped off at Village Hall, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to Noon. 

The Village reserves the right to refuse entrant applications to ensure and maintain the vision and objective of the overall event, and may restrict the number of entrants/participants to meet public safety and event time commitments.  Parade placement is based upon space, number of participants, and on a first-come-first-served basis.

The best neighborhood party held in The Chicago Tribune's Best Downtown is back! Homewood Days, the giant three-day block party in the historic downtown, hosted by the Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce, features cuisine from local restaurants, live entertainment, crafts, and more! A community tradition for over 35 years, this event attracts over 35,000 people from all of Chicago Southland.

 

The family-friendly Homewood Days will feature carnival rides, games, three stages of live entertainment and local fare.  There is a daily $5.00 admission fee for adults and children 12 years old and over - children 11 and under enter free of charge. Proceeds benefit the Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce.
