The Snowflakes are Up!

A sign that the holiday season has arrived is when Public Works dresses Village streets with the bright and festive snowflakes.  Well they're up and the tradition of holiday events and gift giving in Homewood has begun.

Village Hall Holiday Closings

Village Hall will be closed on Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Small Business Saturday

November 27th marks the first-ever, Small Business Saturday, a promotional campaign launched by American Express, which rewards cardholders who spend spend at least $25 at a small, independently owned business on November 27th - the day after "Black Friday," the traditional start of the Christmas shopping season.

Residents are encouraged to participate whether they have an American Express card or not.  The idea is to support small shops in Homewood to keep the local economy strong during these tough times.  Pam Dennis, owner of Bella Vita Home Accents on Dixie Highway in downtown Homewood, was interviewed by Crains about Small Business Saturday and how support of this campaign is needed by this year's holiday shoppers. Read story.

Small, local businesses add character and enhance business areas such as the downtown, Cherry Creek, Southgate, Northgate, Halsted Street, 183rd and Kedzie.

Small businesses are the heart and soul of a community. Many of these shops and restaurants employ neighbors and reinvest money in youth programs, special events, and local not-for-profits.

Take the pledge to support small businesses, and join the movement to shop locally.

Don't Let a Crook Ruin your Holidays!

By Homewood Police Officer Curt Wiest

The holidays are a special time of year, but they are also a time when busy people become careless and individuals are especially vulnerable to theft and other crimes.

  •  When someone asks you for a donation on the street, ask to see official identification for the organization or the solicitor.  Find out what the purpose o f the charity is and how your donation would be used.  Ask if contributions are tax deductible.  If you're not satisfied with the answers, don't give!
  • Give only to charities that you know, for those you don't, ask for a brochure or other written documentation describing the charity and how its funds are used.
  • Be suspicious of charities that accept only cash.  And when you send a check, make it out to the organization, not to an individual.
  • When a solicitor reaches you by phone, offer to mail your donation.  Don't give your credit card number over the telephone.

Community-Wide Luminaria Lighting

Friday, December 17 | 5:00 PM

Throughout Homewood and Flossmoor

Coordinated by the Infant Welfare Flossmoor Juniors

Light Up the Night...Light Up a Child's Life

Infant Welfare Flossmoor Juniors hope to initiate a new tradition in the H-F community, a village-wide lighting event to be held on Friday, December 17. They are sponsoring a luminaria sale at the Homewood Tree Lighting on Friday, December 3 and Flossmoor's Winterfest on Saturday, December 4.

Luminarias are festive accents to brighten outdoor spaces, walkways, and porches during the holiday season. Select downtown retail shops, including Art 4 Soul, will be selling kits through the month of December. Each kit will be sold for $6.00 (contains bags and candles for five luminarias).  Every purchase helps Infant Welfare Society of Chicago bring community-based healthcare to underinsured and uninsured children and women who lack access to basic medical services.

Residents are asked to light their luminarias at 5:00PM to create an elaborate display throughout the streets of Homewood and Flossmoor and a reminder of the care and services provided by the Infant Welfare Society for women, infants, and children. Contact event co-Chair, Carla Franz for details.

Downtown merchants will be open late on the 17th for last minute shopping too!  Stroll the bright streets of downtown Homewood and shop local.
