Homewood Gives Engine Keys to Ford Heights

Last Friday, the Homewood Fire Department gave away its 1982 MACK fire engine (No. 536) to the Ford Heights Fire Department today. This example of intergovernmental cooperation provides communities less fortunate than Homewood an opportunity to have the resources needed to provide quality services to their members.

Library Hosts Blood Drive

Community Blood Drive

Saturday October 30 | 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Homewood Public Library | 17917 Dixie Highway

Did you know that each whole blood donation can help as many as three people? Did you know that every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood? Statistics show that 25 percent or more of us will require blood at least once in our lifetime. Please sign up online at www.heartlandbc.org or contact Debbie at (708) 798-0121 ext. 278 to schedule your donation time and give the most precious gift of all. Bring a friend! Walk-ins are welcome but appointments will be taken first. Photo I.D. is required.

Parking Ordinance Reminders

It is an ordinace violation for  vehicles to be parked on Village streets between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM.  Vehicles parked on Village streets between these hours will be ticketed unless they display an exemption sticker, which is available at Village Hall for no extra charge. You can also call the Police Station if a guest is staying overnight to receive short-term authorization (one or two nights).

Please also remember that during or after a two-inch snowfall, vehicles parked on Village streets will be ticketed and possibly towed.  Vehicles should remain off the streets until Public Works has finished clearing the roadways.
Free Branch Chipping Service

On Saturday, November 6, the Department of Public Works will offer a free branch chipping service to residents.  Bring branches to the Municipal Service Center between the hours of 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  Branches can be up to six (6) inches in diameter; no Pine, Evergreen or shrub trimmings will be accepted.  The Municipal Service Center is located at 17755 Ashland Avenue.  Call Public Works for information, (708) 206-3470.

Sticker Free Leaf Pick Up Service

Homewood Disposal Service provides residents a free fall leaf collection for five consecutive weeks, starting in November. The free leaf pickup is conducted on the same day as regular garbage pickup (residential):

  • November 10
  • November 17
  • November 24
  • December 1

This program requires that only leaf debris be collected sticker free if set out in the usual brown paper bags or in scavenger approved "toter" carts.  Remember, only leaf debris will be picked up at no sticker cost.  Because the leaf collection is deposited at an IEPA approved composting facility, grass clippings, brush, branches, etc. will only be collected by the scavenger if placed in separate bags with the necessary landscape stickers affixed to the outside.

Reminder:  The last day Homewood Disposal takes yard waste is December 1.  If you have any questions related to garbage service, or what can be put at the curb, please call Homewood Disposal directly at (708) 798-1004.

Homewood Public Library | 17917 Dixie Highway

  • What will happen at Oak Forest Hospital?
  • What are the chances of the south Suburbs getting trauma care?
  • What will be the impact of the Health Care Reform Act on Cook County health services?

Join the H-F League of Women Voters and learn the answers to these questions. A presentation will be given by guest speaker William T. Foley, CEO of Cook County Health and Hospital System.  He will outline their strategic plan to address existing problems and discuss how they plan to upgrade and dramatically improve services.

This discussion is open to the public and designed to inform and educate the residents.  For further information, you may contact Syvia Tillman at (708) 799-9721.  The Program is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Homewood-Flossmoor Area.

Construction Updates!

DIXIE HIGHWAY LANDSCAPING PROJECT
The project will extend from Harwood Avenue to Sycamore Drive.   Three new decorative informational signs on the east side of Dixie Highway north of the north viaduct will be installed; brush cleared and new landscaping installed, including a retaining wall at the northwest corner of Harwood Avenue and Dixie Highway. This section of Dixie Highway will remain open throughout construction, however, expect some delays when traveling during the day.

DIXIE HIGHWAY BRIDGE CLOSURE
A new target date of November 12 is set for the completion of the Dixie Highway Bridge located in Flossmoor.  Heavy spring and summer rains and the three week labor strike has delayed the original completion goal of October. If you have any questions about these projects, please contact Village Engineer Max Massi at (708) 206-3470.
