Two New Attractions at Dog Days: Oscar-Meyer Weinermobile & Giant Flea Market
|
| Dog Days of SummerSaturday, August 21 | 8:00 AM to 3:00 PMIrwin Park, 18120 Highland Avenue The Community
Relations Commission and Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, along with Charter
One Bank, PETCO, AAA Rental, and the Oscar-Meyer Wienermobile will host the 10th annual Dog
Days of Summer event on Saturday, August 21 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM in
Irwin Park, located at 18120 Highland Avenue in downtown Homewood.
This year, two new
attractions have been added: free tours of the Oscar-Meyer Weinermobile and
a giant flea market. "Everyone wants to
step inside the Weinermobile, it's one of the most famous mobile marketing
vehicles ever created," says Rachael Jones, public relations and special events
for the Village of Homewood. "I
understand the horn plays the Oscar-Mayer Wiener song, complete with lyrics."
The flea market
offers patrons a unique shopping experience and local not-for-profits an
opportunity to raise money for programs and projects. "We are excited to bring a flea market to this
year's event because it is an interest that will appeal to more members of the
community, not just our four-legged friend lovin' ones. Proceeds from the
unique finds event patrons buy, will benefit the many programs that serve this
community through youth groups, service leagues, and not-for-profits. Plus,
it's a funny way to promote the event - a giant flea market (save the fleas) at
Dog Days!" comments Jones.
The costumed pooch
parade will start promptly at noon with check-in at 11:00 a.m. This year, the parade route has been extended
to provide viewers a better look at each costumed dog and their owner as
compete for "Top Dog" in five unique categories: Most Original Owner-Dog Team, Most Humorous,
Most Unique, Best Celebrity Look-Alike, and Best in Parade (overall). Special VIP seating for family and friends of
parade entrants will be available. Judging will be based on originality,
showmanship, detail of costume and first impression. Prizes and bragging rights
will be awarded. Contestants should pre-register by calling the Village of
Homewood at (708) 798-3000. This year, parade donations will benefit NAWS
(National Animal Welfare Society) to help maintain their low cost spay/neuter
and wellness clinics and programs Kids Club, Food Pantry for Animals, Dog and
Cat Rescue. Sales from the new resale shop in town, Girlfriends, located at
18046 Martin Avenue benefit NAWS.
Jones adds, "Thomas Photographic Services will be onsite to
take professional photos of you and your family, including your fuzzy friend,
to create a keepsake of this 'petacular' day in the park. Throughout the day,
there will be vendor booths, rescue groups and pet adoptions, and purveyors of
specialty hot dog and sausage cuisine.
There will be a live concert by The Fret Brothers, starting at 9:00 a.m.
There are free activities for the kids and the annual hot dog eating contest
will be sponsored by Oscar-Meyer this year."

Memorial Ribbons and Young Trees
|
|
Village Arborist Jim Tresouthick encourages residents who have tied memorial ribbons around young, less established trees to relocate to a light post, railing, or more mature tree. The trunks of young parkway trees with ribbons tied around have been spotted growing beyond the ribbon. This isn't good for the overall health of the tree. The Village appreciates the cooperation of residents to keep Homewood's forestry thriving.
