Take 10 Minutes and Send it In!
2010 Census forms began arriving in 120 million mailboxes across the nation yesterday -  just the 23rd time the country has undertaken the constitutionally mandated population count that dates back to 1790.

The Census mailing package includes a cover letter, the 2010 Census form and a postage-paid return envelope.  The 10 questions are basic and should take about 10 minutes to complete.  The 2010 Census does not ask about your legal status or for your Social Security Number.  Confidentiality is assured.  The questions asked are:
  1. The number of people living in the residence
  2. Any additional people that might be living there as of April 1, 2010
  3. Whether the residence is owned or rented
  4. Telephone number (in case the Census Bureau has follow-up questions)
  5. Name
  6. Sex
  7. Age and date of birth
  8. Whether Hispanic origin
  9. Race
  10. Whether that person sometimes lives somewhere else
The Census determines how $300 billion in federal funds for grants and programs are allocated.  Homewood's budget receives a portion of the State Use Tax, Income Tax, and Motor Fuel Tax on a per-capita basis.  These monies are used to fund the Village's operations and street re-paving and improvement projects. If our population dips because not everyone participated in the Census, we will receive less money to fund operations and street work. Based upon our current population of 19,543 residents, we received over $2.5 million dollars of state revenue.   Your participation really matters to all of Homewood - a lower head count means less money for crucial community planning efforts. Click here to learn more about the 2010 Census.

Municipalities Concerned over Governor Quinn's State Budget Address
In his State Budget Address, Governor Quinn proposed
a $300 million cut to monies guaranteed to municipal governments under the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF). The proposal will cut the amount of income tax that goes to local governments from 10 percent to 7 percent.

"This 30 percent slash in local tax revenue will undoubtedly increase the burden that municipalities are already feeling during this recession," states Village Manager Mark Franz. Read on.
Tree Committee Presents Spring Selection
The Homewood Tree Committee's TreeShare Program is underway.  The program offers residents the chance to purchase selected trees at a 50% discount.  These trees can be planted anywhere on your private property or parkway area, as long as no utility conflicts exist.

The trees come from top-quality nurseries located throughout the Midwest region and are chosen for their ability to survive in Homewood's soil and climate.  Each tree is hand-selected and inspected by the Village arborist, and delivered to your property.

Trees must be ordered by April 3rd.  Click here to view the Spring selection and to learn more about ordering.
