Auction draws over 1,000 Participants
This past Sunday, more than 1,000 participants packed the gym and cafeteria of H-F High School to bid on auction items donated by  local merchants - over 200 items: round-trip tickets to Mexico, diamond earrings, shopping sprees and gift cards, and free services!

For the past three months, residents of Homewood, Flossmoor, and Glenwood have been encouraged to save their receipts in exchange for a voucher, representing the sum of their receipts, to use at the community auction.

466 people turned in their receipts and those receipts totaled  over $2.4 million dollars.

"The event was a call to residents to shop locally and that by shopping locally we can maintain a healthy commercial environment in our own villages," says Bill Ernat, Community Development Director (Homewood).  "Having strong commercial districts makes all the taxing bodies stronger, allows shoppers to stay closer to home when shopping, and promotes community awareness."

The Save Your Receipts Campaign and Community Auction event were a collaborative effort between the Homewood Area Chamber, villages of Homewood, Flossmoor, and Glenwood, local businesses, and volunteers who dedicated hundreds of hours tallying receipts.

Remember to "Shop Homewood First".

Five Easy Steps to Avoid Conflicts with Coyotes
The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control  would like to provide residents with five simple precautions on how to avoid conflicts with coyotes.  There are more sightings of coyotes in February as this is when coyotes mate:

  • Do not feed coyotes.  Keep garbage can lids closed so as not to attract rodents, which are the coyotes main source of food.
  • Do not let your pets run loose.  Don't let your cats roam.  Keep dogs on leashes or stay outside with them in fenced in areas. Your presence is the major deterrent to coyotes.
  • Do not run from a coyote.  Wave your hands, stomp your feet, shout at them, or throw things at them.
  • Fencing and lighting your yards can act as repellents.
  • Report aggressive, fearless coyotes to the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control: (708) 974-6140.
