Fall Fest and Chili Cook-Off: September 26
Downtown Homewood's Fall Fest and annual Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Hickory Road from Dixie Highway to Harwood Avenue.

Chili Cook-Off Entrants Wanted
A highlight of Fall Fest is the annual Chili-Cook Off where residents vie for "Homewood's Top Chef" while raising money for a local not-for-profit in the Open Chili Tasting. Proceeds from this year's competition will benefit the South Suburban Family Shelter. If you are interested in competing in the Chili Cook-Off, download the application here
Cook County Medication Take-Back Program
On Saturday, September 26, the Downtown Homewood Farmers' Market will host another Touch of Green event.  Residents will be able to properly discard of expired or unwanted medications through the Cook County Department of Environmental Control's Medication Take-Back Program.  This free service will be offered from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the parking lot of St. Paul Community Church behind the Downtown Homewood Farmers' Market.  Residents should access the lot via Olive Road (off Dixie Highway).
  
Medication Drop-Off Instructions:
  • Bring only medication items from private households - NOT medications from businesses or doctor's offices
  • Use a permanent marker to black out your name or personal information on the prescription label
  • Take medications to collection site ONLY during the drop-off site's open house of operation
  • Please follow directions at the drop-site carefully.  Only give medications to personnel of the drop-off site.
  • This is NOT a share or reuse opportunity. All medications received will be destroyed in an environmentally responsible manner.
 Acceptable Items:
  • Prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Medicated ointments & shampoos
  • Liquids containing medications
  • Prescription inhalers
  • Over-the counter inhalers
  • Glass thermometers containing mercury
  • medical devices containing mercury (blood pressure units, barameters, etc.)
  • Sharp needles

11th Annual Walk of Hope
The Cancer Support Center will host its annual Walk of Hope on Sunday, October 4!  This year, the Center expects over 1,500 to walk and is hoping to raise $170,000.  The Center is privately funded and provides services free of charge to a diverse participant base including cancer patients, caregivers, children, teens and friends of the cancer patient.
 
Anyone can walk.  Register yourself or a team today and start collecting pledges for the Center.  Learn more.
Beautification Awards Ceremony: October 1
The Beautification Awards Committee will host its annual Beautification Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 1 at the Marie-Irwin Center.  Residents who have received the coveted Beautification and Landmark Awards will be recognized for their landscape and overall exterior maintainance efforts. The winter issue of the Village Key will feature photos of each recipient .  After coordinating the Beautification Recognition Program, the Committee will continue its beautification efforts by decorating downtown Homewood for the winter and holiday months. H-F Homecoming Weekend:  October 2
The 50th Anniversary Committee will host  fireworks, an alumni recognition ceremony, and a golf cart parade during halftime at the homecoming football game. Visit the H-F website for a complete list of events planned for H-F's 50th Annivesary.
Rail Committee's New Event: October 17 
The Rail Committee will host a new event for children at the Rail Park located on Park Avenue at 6:30 PM on Saturday, October 17.  Join the Committee for marshmallows, hobo stories, and old fashion sing-a-long.  The Rail Park features a retired and restored Illinois Central locomotive and caboose. Hall of Fame Luncheon:  October 18
The Heritage Committee is now accepting reservations for its Eighth Annual Hall of Fame Inauguration Luncheon on Sunday, October 18 at Calument Country Club.  The Committee selected the following individuals to be inducted in the Homewood Hall of Fame:  Richard R. Casey, James and Nellie Cowing, Father Stephen Sullivan, Art Welsh, and Dr. Bertram and Dr. Mary Woodland. Is Your House BOO-tiful for Halloween?

If you decorate your front yard at Halloween for trick-or-treaters, we want to know about it.  Email your street address, along with a photo, to the Community Information Coordinator by October 14.  A list of BOO-tiful houses will be included in the October 28 e-Newswire.

Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve
The Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve is pleased to announce the opening of a nature-themed art gallery.  The gallery open house will be on October 24 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Please join the Preserve as they showcase local artists' works.

Seeing Red Spots?
The Department of Public Works is marking Ash trees with red spots so crews can identify them more easily in inclement weather.  Marked Ash trees will be south of 183rd Street and west of the railroad tracks. The Department's cyclic tree removal program will begin November and run through early March.  For more information about Homewood's Ash tree population and the tree removal program, contact the Department of Public Works at (708) 206-3470.
TreeShare Program
The Village of Homewood's TreeShare Program offers residents the chance to split the cost of selected trees.  Residents receive a 50% discount on trees, which can be planted anywhere on their private property or parkway area, as long as no utility conflicts exist. The trees come from top-quality nurseries located throughout the Midwest region and are chosen for their ability to survive in Homewood's soil and  climate. It's Harvest Time at the Farmers' Market
Mums and asters, squash, radishes, mustard greens, bok choy and more. Market vendors offer their fall sprawl at the Downtown Homewood Farmers' Market. Visit the Market every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the parking lot of St. Paul Community Church (18200 Dixie Highway). The Market is sponsored by the Village of Homewood and Homewood Rotary Club.
