Improvements to Infrastructure Continue |
|
- The north viaduct project is complete, and now improvements to the south viaduct (183rd Street and Harwood Avenue) will begin with the installation of handrails along the sidewalk. The estimated timeline for completion is two weeks. 183rd Street will remain open throughout construction; however, the outside lane and sidewalk will be closed.
- Improvements to Halsted Street continue.
- Improvements to Dixie Highway and 175th Street are complete.

Village Hall Closed for Labor Day |
|
The Village Hall and Municipal Service Center will be closed Monday, September 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The offices will reopen on Tuesday, September 8 at 8:00 AM. On this holiday, emergency water and sewer service is available by calling (708) 206-3420. Customary police and fire emergency services will be available. Garbage pickups will be delayed one day. For scavenger service information, contact Homewood Disposal at (708) 798-1004. |
15 Tons of e-Waste Recycled |

On Saturday, August 22 the Downtown Homewood Farmers' Market featured electronic waste recycling for residents. Over 15.5 tons of e-waste was saved from being dumped in a landfill by the Assistive Technology Exchange Network (ATEN) who provides refurbished computer equipment to students with disabilities. ATEN would like to thank the 196 residents that donated these items.
So far, the Farmers' Market has hosted a rain barrel drive, and free document and electronic recycling. Two additional eco-friendly activities will be offered to residents in September and October. Details for September's green opportunity will be featured in the next e-Newswire issue. |

Mums and asters, squash, radishes, mustard greens, bok choy and more. Market vendors offer their fall sprawl at the Downtown Homewood Farmers' Market. Visit the Market every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the parking lot of St. Paul Community Church (18200 Dixie Highway). The Market is sponsored by the Village of Homewood and Homewood Rotary Club.

Merchants Host Sidewalk Sale |

Southgate merchants will host a giant sidewalk sale on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12. Contact your favorite business for details. The Southgate Shopping District is located along Dixie Highway, south of 183rd Street.  The villages of Homewood, Flossmoor, and Glenwood, along with the Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce will reintroduce the Community Auction in an effort to stimulate and grow sales for local retailers during the 2009 holiday season.
- Residents are encouraged to save their receipts for all purchases made October 17, 2009 through January 31, 2010.
- For every dollar spent, participants will receive one point to bid on auction items.
- The Auction will be held on February 14, 2010 at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, 999 Kedzie Avenue.

Downtown Hosts Morning Shopping Event |

Merchants in the downtown have made a little twist to their next Girls' Night Out (GNO) event. On September 11, GNO will be held in the morning from 8:30 AM to noon. Fall Fest and Chili Cook-Off: September 26 |

 Downtown Homewood's Fall Fest and annual Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Hickory Road from Dixie Highway to Harwood Avenue. Come out and enjoy live music, horse-drawn wagon rides through downtown, the annual bean bag tournament, petting zoo, games, craft vendors, pumpkin painting, and scrumptious cuisine prepared by local eateries. View the entertainment and activity schedule and plan for a full day of family fun. |
Enter the Annual Chili Cook-Off |
A highlight of Fall Fest is the annual Chili-Cook Off where residents vie for "Homewood's Top Chef" while raising money for a local not-for-profit in the Open Chili Tasting. 11th Annual Walk of Hope |

The Cancer Support Center will host its annual Walk of Hope on Sunday, October 4! This year, the Center expects over 1,500 to walk and is hoping to raise $170,000. The Center is privately funded and provides services free of charge to a diverse participant base including cancer patients, caregivers, children, teens and friends of the cancer patient.
