North Viaduct Closed August 25
Dixie Highway will be closed at the north viaduct (between Park Avenue and Harwood Avenue) starting at 7:00 AM on August 25 for pavement patching.  The project is expected to last three days.  However, any inclement weather may lengthen the closure period. Driveway access will be given to those businesses on Harwood Avenue and Dixie Highway on the east side of the viaduct in the work zone.
  • For your convenience, the posted detour route for northbound traffic on Dixie Highway is Ridge Road east to Ashland Avenue, north to 171st Street and west to Dixie Highway.
  • The posted detour for southbound traffic is west on 175th Street to Governors Highway, south to 183rd Street and east to Dixie Highway.

Dog Days of Summer Parade Winners
The Community Relations Commission, Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, and PETCO sponsored a fun day in Irwin Park this past Saturday at Dog Days of Summer.  Costumed dogs paraded the park while judges looked for winners in five unique categories. 
 
Congratulations 2009 Pooch Parade Winners
  • Maggie and Gabby Palomo dressed up with their dog, Jill, as the Statue of Liberty to win Most Original Owner-Dog Team costume .
  • Cinnamon won Most Humorous for her Little Mermaid costume.
  • Max dressed up as a tricycle and won Most Unique.
  • Shelby dressed as "Muttlyn Monroe" and won Best Celebrity Look-Alike
  • Louie the Labrador was in full police uniform and won Best in Parade.

e-Waste Recycling This Saturday
This Saturday, August 22, the Farmers' Market will feature free electronic waste recycling.  Assistive Technology Exchange Network (ATEN) provides the free service in an effort to acquire computer equipment for students with disabilities.The following items will be accepted for e-waste recycling:
  • PC and Macintosh Computers
  • Printers
  • Monitors
  • Disk Drives
  • Cell Phones
  • Ink Jet Cartridges
  • Peripherals (mice, keyboards, etc.)
  • CD-ROM Drives
  • Software (original disks)
  • Server Equipment
  • Communication Devices
  • Low-Tech Devices (switches, key guards, etc.)
All recyclable items will be accepted as donations; participants will receive documentation of their contributions for tax purposes.

ATEN is a program of United Cerebral Palsy-Infinitec; it was established in June of 1995 in partnership with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). This processing facility is located at 7550 W. 183rd Street in Tinley Park.
 
The Village sponsors eco-friendly activities for residents looking to conserve resources and recycle the items they use everyday.
Farmers' Market
Remember to shop the Farmers' Market every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the parking lot of St. Paul Community Church (18200 Dixie Highway). The Market is sponsored by the Village of Homewood and Homewood Rotary Club.

Community Auction LogoThe villages of Homewood, Flossmoor, and Glenwood, along with the Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce will reintroduce the Community Auction in an effort to stimulate and grow sales for local retailers during the 2009 holiday season.
  • Residents are encouraged to save their receipts for all purchases made October 17, 2009 through January 31, 2010. 
  • For every dollar spent, participants will receive one point to bid on donated gifts. 
  • The Auction will be held on February 14, 2010 at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, 999 Kedzie Avenue. 

Auction organizers are asking Homewood, Flossmoor, and Glenwood residents who are members of FACEBOOK to become a fan of the Community Auction page.  Information will be set-up on FACEBOOK and fans will receive up-to-date information on Auction prizes and more.  Search "Community Auction" and become a FAN!

Southgate Sidewalk Sales in September
Look for a giant sidewalk sale in the Southgate Shopping District in September.  Ask your favorite Southgate merchant for details, or watch for information in an upcoming e-Newswire.
Fall Fest and Chili Cook-Off
Mark your calendars!  Homewood's favorite fall time festival, Fall Fest and the Annual Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Hickory Road at Dixie Highway in downtown Homewood. Fall Fest will feature live entertainment, horse-drawn wagon rides through downtown, the annual bean bag tournament, petting zoo, games, craft vendors, pumpkin painting, and scrumptious cuisine prepared by local eateries.
Block Parties
In addition to the many special community events throughout the summer, the Community Relations Commission would like to remind residents that a block party is the best way to meet neighbors and simply have a great time.  Learn more about hosting a block party this summer season.

DHBA to Host GNO in the AM
Girls Night Out
The Downtown Homewood Business Association (DHBA) has made a little twist to its next Girls' Night Out (GNO) event.  On September 11, GNO will be held in the morning from 8:30 AM to noon.  Downtown merchants will offer special promotions and discounts, free products, raffles, and fun activities for shoppers! Call your favorite downtown merchant for details, or visit the DHBA website.
