Starry Nights Concert: June 12, The Guess Who
Well known in the late '60s and early '70s for experimenting with the sounds of freedom, psychedelic and garage rock, The Guess Who reunited in 2000. They bring their unique, memorable sound down from Canada to H-F this summer! Enjoy a long string of hits, as this band was one of the very few that had double-sided singles where songs from both sides went to No. 1 on the charts. Hits include: These Eyes; Laughing; No Time; Undun; American Woman; Share the Land; and No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature.
The show will be held at Irwin Park.  Seating starts at 6:30 PM; performances start at 8:00 PM.  Food and beverages will be available. Advance tickets are $20/adults and $7/kids ages 12 and under. For ticket information, contact the H-F Park District at (708) 957-0300.
Movies in Our Parks: June 19
  • Movie Title: Journey To The Center Of The Earth (3D)
  • Show Time: All movies begin at dusk.
  • Location: Patriot's Park located at 187th Street, just east of Riegel Road.
Snacks are available to purchase.This movie is Rated PG for intense adventure action and some scary moments. Art and Garden Street Fair: June 20
The Downtown Homewood Business Association (DHBA) will continue Homewood's 28 year long history as an art event venue on June 20 when it hosts the Downtown Homewood Art and Garden Street Fair from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Martin Avenue at Ridge Road in downtown Homewood. The Street Fair will feature work from artisans specializing in fine art, jewelry, pottery, textiles, and photography, including antique and garden vendors.  Art activities for children will include ceramic painting, suncatchers, and beading and mosaic projects sponsored by Art 4 Soul, Bead Tribe, and Union Street Gallery. Art activity kits start at $5.00 and include all materials to complete project.  Bamboo Blue Restaurant and Dunning's Market will offer gourmet food and feature a selection of fine wines and drinks for Street Fair patrons. The DHBA will hold a raffle for patrons to win one-of-a-kind art pieces, which have been donated by the participating art vendors.  Homewood businesses in the downtown will be open with special promotions until 6:00 PM.   For more information about the Street Fair call (708) 206-3375.
President's Art Contest: June 20
Village President Richard Hofeld will host his annual President's Art Contest on June 20 in conjunction with the Art and Garden Street Fair held on Martin Avenue at Ridge Road.  

Amateur artists of all ages and media styles will compete in two themed-categories:  "Home Sweet Homewood" and "The Four Seasons of Izaak Walton." 

Judging this year's contest is Anna Carroll, a professional artist and resident of Homewood, who after attending the Art Institute of Chicago studied under the tutelage of Mohamed Drisi; Frank J. Casella, a professional publications and event photographer mentored by John H. White, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist; and Carol Boyajian, a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Certified Illinois art teacher and fine artist.  Carol's artwork is included in many corporate and private collections.

Winning artists receive cash prizes and are recognized by the Village President and Village Board of Trustees at the June 23 board meeting.   Winning entries will be on display in the Village Hall and during Homewood Days at the Village booth.

Drivin' the Dixie: June 20
On Saturday, June 20 the 7th annual Drivin' the Dixie will take place along the historic road in Blue Island, Posen, Markham, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Flossmoor, Chicago Heights, Steger, Crete, Beecher, Grant Park and Momence. A new format this year encourages registered participants to follow a tour guide and map to explore historic sites, museums, intriguing places and community festivities.  Registrants will have a passport stamped in each participating Dixie town to receive a free raffle ticket upon arrival at the Island Park in Momence.   The day is an exciting low cost adventure for car collectors and admirers and families alike as registration includes free coffee, rolls, hot dog lunch and Italian ice. 

Visit locations along the Dixie, which appeared in movies or on television such as Universal Studio's "The Express" starring Dennis Quaid, "The Road to Perdition" starring Tom Hanks, and WTTW Channel 11 Geoffrey Baer's "South of Chicago, Suburbs, Steel Mills, Shoreline."

Registration is $10.00 per car or $15.00 the day of the event.

Farmers' Market NEW Location: June 20
This year, the Downtown Homewood Farmers' Market will relocate to the parking lot of St. Paul Community Church located at 18200 Dixie Highway. The new location brings the foot traffic from the Market into the heart of the downtown business district to serve both the merchants and downtown patrons. The Market is sponsored by the Village of Homewood and Homewood Rotary Club. 
 
Every Saturday, starting June 20 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, shoppers will find a vast array of specialty products and organic produce, including fresh cut flowers and perennials, coffee and tea, culinary herbs, and specialty meats and cheeses.

Relay for Life: June 27
On June 27, Relay for Life of Homewood, Flossmoor, and Olympia Fields will be hosting their annual overnight event to celebrate the lives of those who have cancer and remembered loved ones lost to the disease.  Teams from local families, community groups and businesses are still needed to participate in this life-affirming experience to share hope with cancer survivors, caregivers and other supporters in the fight against cancer. July 4th Parade:  Application Deadline, June 26
Does your service organization want to participate in Homewood's July Fourth parade?  There's still time to submit your application.
Every year the Fire Department organizes the line-up for the annual parade, which marches from the Fire Station on Dixie Highway to Ridge Road, and east to the Izaak Walton Preserve. Thousands of Homewood residents, friends, family and visitors enjoy the parade as well as the Family Fun Fest sponsored by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District held after the parade at the Izaak Walton Preserve.

A new application form will be used this year to better organize the line-up. Applications are available at Village Hall and at the Fire Department, or on the Village website under the "Events" link. All entries to the parade must be decorated in patriotic themes. All entry forms must be received by June 26 at 5:00 PM.

5th Annual Run for Freedom 5K
On Saturday, July 4 at 9:00 AM the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club will host the fifth annual Run for Freedom 5K.  The race will start and end at Lions Club Park with the course winding through the residential streets of Homewood.  For information, please contact the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club for details: (708) 799-1323.
A Reminder from Homewood Disposal
Homewood Disposal would like to remind residents that this year the July Fourth holiday falls on Saturday. This means that residential service will not be affected by the holiday.  Please put garbage out on your regular day of service the week before and after this holiday.   • Follow the easy payment instructions
  • First time users, please use your 12 digit water account number, without any dashes, for both your account number and your password

The Lily Pad has expanded to a larger store and is now located at 18681 Dixie Highway.  They will be celebrating their grand opening on Saturday, June 13 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Stop in and see their new store and expanded wares.
 
FAQ:  Beautification Awards
Q: Has the Beautification Committee begun their search for Beautification Award Recipients? 
 
A: Yes. The Committee, comprised of ten residents, begins its search during the growing season, May through September. The Committee looks for properties that show neatness and maintenance of the entire property (house and other structures), including the maintenance of planting areas, landscape and all visible yard.
