Firefighter Returns From Iraq
A big "WELCOME HOME" was given to Firefighter/Paramedic Steve DeJong who returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. During the year and a half that he was away, a Blue Star Banner hung proudly on the front of the fire station. In a surprise ceremony, Steve was asked to remove the Blue Star Banner, marking his safe return. A cake and coffee reception followed. This was FF/PMD DeJong's second tour of military duty since 2004.
Homewood Hall of Fame Nominations Due March 27
The Homewood Heritage Committee invites residents to nominate friends and family to the Homewood Hall of Fame.  The Village of Homewood is proud of its heritage and its strong sense of community. It is the wealth of its heritage that has contributed greatly to the Homewood we know today.
Homewood has been privileged to have many individuals who have given generously of their time and talent to maintain and strengthen the sense of community that has been so vital in developing Homewood as a prosperous community.

In 2003, the Heritage Committee began to develop a Hall of Fame project to recognize those individuals who have made significant and beneficial contributions to the life and well being of the Village of Homewood. Last year's recipients included Edward and Margaret Boivin, Walter Gleason, Manny and Judy Hoffman, Norman Kranz, and Melvin K. Meyer. Please nominate someone you think deserving of this recognition.

Nominations are available at the Homewood Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road, Homewood, IL 60430 or online at homesweethomewood.com. Applications are due by March 27, 2009.  For further details, contact Heritage Committee Chairperson Elaine Egdorf at (708) 798-9535.
Green Tip - Earth Hour 2009
AstrovanOn March 28, join tens of millions in turning off lights for the largest climate event in history - Earth Hour!  Last year, more than 2.7 million Illinois residents helped the lights of Chicago's iconic skyline - and lights in communities across the state - go dark for one hour - Earth Hour.  This year, Earth Hour will be on March 28 from 8:30 to 9:30 PM.  Households, organizations and businesses will turn off their lights and turn their attention towards the need for substantial, long-term action to raise awareness about energy efficiency and global climate change.

It is anticipated that Earth Hour 2009 will be even larger than last year's inaugural global event, as 400+ cities in 74 countries have already signed on to participate in what the World Wildlife Fund has said will be the "largest climate event in history."
Beyond turning off your lights, there are lots of things you can do to make Earth Hour 2009 an even greater success. Learn more at www.EarthHourUS.org.  Remember, every single light we turn off at 8:30 PM on March 28 will make a statement and a difference!

 Homewood Railroad Days
All Aboard!
Homewood's Sixth Annual Railroad Days will be held Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17. The events are open to all those who enjoy trains, young and old alike. Visit railroad attractions in downtown Homewood throughout the day:
  • The Railroad Platform offers an elevated and comfortable spot to see CN, Amtrak, and Metra trains as they pass through Homewood. The platform is wheelchair accessible and features a scanner broadcasting radio communications between trains and the nearby rail yard.
  • The Rail Park is on the west side of the tracks on Park Avenue north of the train station.  Visitors can enjoy the Rail Park featuring two vintage pieces of Illinois Central rail equipment from the historic "Main Line of Mid-America." The park is a perfect spot to relax and offers another vantage point to view train traffic as it passes through Homewood.

For full details on Rail Fest and railroad attractions, visit the Village website.

June 20 an Exciting Day in Homewood!
The Homewood Farmers' Market begins its 27th season in a new location. Find all your favorite vendors, and a few new ones, at the St. Paul Community Church parking lot on Dixie highway. Market hours will remain the same, 8AM - 1PM. The Market features the freshest fruits and vegetables, fresh baked breads, jams, jellies, and more.

The Downtown Homewood Business Association and the Village of Homewood will host the 1st Downtown Homewood Art and Garden Street Fair. The fair will be on Martin Avenue from Ridge Road south to Hickory Road and will run from 10AM to 6PM. The fair will feature beautiful garden décor and one-of-a-kind works from artisans from around the mid-west.

Drivin' the Dixie will be a more leisurely drive along the historic route to take advantage of the events, activities and points of interest in the towns from Blue Island to Momence rather than a single parade of cars. Homewood will welcome participants in the earlier part of the day for live music, food, and fun at the Homewood Farmers' Market and our many shops along the route.  Points of interest include historic markers, plaques and sites, Dorband-Howe House Museum, architectural features, Haas murals, and railroad sites.  For full details, visit the Village website or call Heritage Committee Chairman Elaine Egdorf at 798-9535. Registration required.
Ice Rescue at Izaak Walton
Earlier this year, as the harsh winter weather began to subside, the Fire Department responded to a report of a person in the lake at Izaak Walton.  When they arrived at the scene, they discovered that a dog had wandered out onto the ice and had fallen through.  To compound the problem, two women had tried to rescue the dog and were also in the icy water.  Thanks to two divers from the Village Fire Department, a successful rescue was carried out and this story has a happy ending.  The dog was taken to the Flossmoor Animal Hospital for medical attention and the two women were treated for cuts and scrapes from the ice.
