Southland Footprints
The Active Transportation Alliance (formerly the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation) is looking for residents of the south suburbs that want to decrease their carbon footprints.  You may be thinking "What is a carbon footprint?"  Good question.  In brief, a carbon footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment.   For many of us, the desire to conserve energy and cut back on waste is there but we just don't know how.  Well the Active Transportation Alliance is here to help you figure out how with the Southland Footprints program.  Southland Footprints provides a Footprints coach to participants, similar to a personal trainer.  Your coach will help you create a personal program of biking, walking, and transit options that are most convenient for you.  Coaches are experts in the south suburbs' active transportation network and will assist you in finding the safest bike routes, easiest bus routes, and the most convenient transit alternatives to help you decrease your carbon footprint.  Enrollment is free! Questions? Contact Falon Mihalic at 312-427-3325, ext. 289 or falon@activetrans.org or visit the Southland Footprints website at: www.activetrans.org/footprints.
Growing Up Ebony and Ivory
The Story of an Interracial Friendship - Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Homewood Public Library.    Lim De Priest, an African-American who grew up in Jim Crow Mississippi, and Joyce Elizabeth Norman who is white and hails from a small farming community in Minnesota found they had much in common when they met several years ago as teachers at Buffalo Grove High School. As they shared their very different life experiences, they became fast friends and have recently co-authored a book about the strong friendship they have forged in spite of their different racial and cultural backgrounds.

Help celebrate Black History month and join us to hear their stories and have a conversation about how differences that divide us in an increasingly multi-cultural society can be bridged when we concentrate instead on our similarities and the hopes and dreams that unite us.
Bi-Weekly FAQ
Q. My Village sticker is dated 2008- 2009, I was told the new stickers weren't  available yet, am I going to get a ticket?

A. Thank you for your question. Vehicle stickers expire on April 1 of each year. Vehicle owners whose vehicles are registered with the Village are mailed a postcard-size vehicle sticker application prior to April 1.  To expedite payment processing, this postcard should be provided with the payment.

Click Here for more specific information regarding vehicle stickers.
Green Living: Lowering your energy costs
Just a simple reminder of simple ways to lower your heating and energy costs during the remaining winter months;
Temper the temperature. Turning your thermostat down just 5 degrees can cut energy bills (and pollution) by 10 percent, so keep it at 68 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, and 60 degrees or less while you sleep. Chilly? Put on a sweater or add an extra blanket to your bed.
Fan the heat around. Running your ceiling fan clockwise, at a slow speed, re-circulates warmer air that accumulates at the ceiling, reducing energy consumption by up to 10 percent.
