Still in Town - New Location
On January 12th, Balagio Ristaurante relocated from their downtown Homewood location to 17501 Dixie Highway (the former Rookies site).  In addition to their standard menu and seating, the new location also has banquet rooms available to accommodate special occasions.

After almost 10 years at 2056 Ridge Road, Mary's Health Hut has relocated to 2024 Ridge Road - just one block east.  Mary will continue to carry health products for people, as well as their feline and canine companions.

Girls Night Out The Downtown Business Association will be hosting its winter Girls Night Out on Friday, January 30 from 5 PM to 9 PM throughout downtown Homewood.  Look for discounts and raffles at various shops, boutiques, spas, salons and restaurants.  For information, contact Margo of Harvest Home and Garden at 799-7996, or at shopgirl816@yahoo.com.

News from Homewood Heritage Committee
It's nomination time for the 2009 Homewood Hall of Fame.    Nominate those friends, family members or individuals you believe have given generously of their time and talent to strengthen the sense of community that has been so vital in developing Homewood as a prosperous village.  Click here for a nomination form or visit Village Hall. The deadline for nominations is March 27.  Good Luck!
Snow/Tow Ordinance
Please help keep our streets open.  When snowfall exceeds two (2) inches, Village Ordinance requires that all residents remove their cars from the street for safe plowing.  The Department of Public Works continues to plow streets even after the snow has stopped.  Repeated plowing ensures adequate removal of snow and proper salting.  Do not return your vehicles to the roadway until plow trucks have ceased repeated plowing and salting.  Violators are subject to ticketing and towing.
Chocolate Fest 2009
The Community Relations Commission will host its annual Chocolate Fest on Saturday, February 21 from 11 AM to 2 PM in the HF Park District Auditorium.  The event features the fares of chocolatiers from around the country.  The annual bake-off will also be held in conjunction with this event.  Amateur bakers can enter their favorite chocolate recipe for a chance to win recognition and cash prizes.  Learn more.
H-F Symphony and Chorus Auction

On Saturday, February 7, the south building of the H-F High School cafeteria will be the place to be!  From 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Homewood-Flossmoor Symphony and Chorus will be hosting its annual auction to support their trip to Austria-Germany.  Many fabulous items will be available to bid on, including such items as round-trip Southwest Airlines tickets, tickets to see Jersey Boys, and a Mag-Mile weekend getaway package.  All monies go toward defraying the cost of this fantastic opportunity for our students.  For further information, contact Mark Marketti at 815-739-8008 or check out their flyer at:

Green Living: Saving Energy at Work
According to the University of Bristol, saving energy at work can be as easy as following these easy steps:

  • Enable the power down features on your PC - Screen savers do  not save energy.
  • Switch off your PC monitor when you are not using it, for example when you go to meetings or for lunch - A monitor uses about two-thirds of a PCs total electricity. If left on overnight, it wastes the energy that would be used to make 800 A4 sheets of paper.
  • Switch office equipment off at night. A photocopier left on overnight uses enough energy to make 5,300 photocopies.
  • Switch off lights if you are leaving the room for longer than 15 minutes - it is a myth that it is cheaper to leave fluorescent lights on than to switch them off.
  • Switch off lights when you go home - lighting an empty office overnight wastes enough energy to heat water for 1000 cups of coffee.
  • Maximize the use of natural daylight and switch off lights when daylight is adequate - switching off a typical fluorescent light for one hour in each working day, 66 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions is saved annually.

Bi-Weekly FAQ
Q. I will soon be celebrating a new mile stone of a birthday, my 60th. My neighbor told me about a taxi voucher program that the Village offers for seniors that live in town. What taxi company should I call and where do I sign up?

A. The Senior Transportation Program is a popular way of travel for many seniors in our community. Whether the vouchers are used to see a doctor, go to the grocery store, or simply go to a friend's house for an afternoon of cards, seniors that prefer not to drive may use the taxi vouchers to travel around town.
For more information about the Senior Transportation Program, visit the Village website and look under "Senior Services" or click on this link:
