Snow Removal Tips
|
|
Frustrated
when you finish shoveling your driveway and a snow plow comes by and pushes
snow back at the base? While there is no
way to plow the streets so that your driveway remains "snow free", you will
find that less snow is pushed back onto your driveway base if you shovel the
snow from your driveway "down street" (down street is the direction traffic
flows). Never shovel or blow snow into
public streets; this creates unsafe conditions for all drivers, and violators
will be ticketed.

Green Living: Reusing Bread Bags
|
|
Imagine how many bread
bags your family goes through each year and then consider what happens to them
after their initial use. Unfortunately,
they aren't very "earth friendly." Here
are a few suggestions on how to repurpose them:
- For packing sandwiches
- As packing material when shipping goods
- General storage for small items
- A replacement for freezer bags
- Plastic bag crafts
- A cake icing piping bag
- Handy bags for picking up dog poop
- Liners for a benchtop kitchen tidy
- Makeshift gloves
- Punch holes in the bag and use as a seedling tube
- Car travel rubbish bag
- Seasoning bag; add seasoning and meat and shake
These ideas won't keep the bread bags out of the waste stream, but they might
take the place of something you'd otherwise buy for the tasks. Lowering consumption of anything and
everything is something we can all do to reduce our environmental impact.
"Repurposing" is one of the 3R's of going green: "Reduce, Reuse
(Repurpose) and Recycle! Sometimes it's the simple things we often overlook
that give us the best opportunity for contributing to a greener planet.

Bi-Weekly FAQ |
|
Question: My neighbor and
I were thrown off about the recycling pick-up dates, maybe from holiday
confusion. Do you have a 2009 schedule for garbage pick-ups, including which
holidays will delay regular pick-ups?
Answer: Thank you for your question. Occasionally
residents are confused by this very topic. Village garbage is collected by
Homewood Disposal, not the Village of Homewood itself. In Homewood, residential
garbage is collected every week on Wednesday. Recycling is collected every
other week on Wednesday. Sometimes holidays can delay pick up by a day. For
complete information about garbage and recycling collection and the new 2009
schedule, please visit the Homewood

You Drink. You Drive. You Lose. Campaign |
|
The recent "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose" campaign sponsored and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation was a success. Motorists concerned about alcohol related incidents exercised good judgment. This was reflected in the minimal amount of alcohol related enforcement actions required by Homewood Police Officers during the holiday. A total of 156 incidents were recorded: DUI - 1 Open Alcohol - 1 Speeding - 93 Insurance Violations - 15 Seat Belt Violations - 13 Child Restraint - 3 Suspended License - 5 No Valid Registration - 10 Equipment Violations - 6 Traffic Red Light - 5 Other Violations - 4 Drivers are encouraged to reflect on the dangers of drinking and driving throughout the calendar year and not just during holiday seasons. Always wear your safety belt and have your children in a proper child restraint system. |
