Improvement Projects Reminder
While no one likes the delays and inconveniences of road construction, please remember that these projects are planned to improve the quality of life and services offered.  The following improvements are underway:
Dixie Highway and Ridge Road
Asphalt replacement and pavement marking on Dixie Highway and Ridge Road. The work is scheduled to be finished within one week.  Street parking will not be allowed at these locations when posted by the contractor.  Dixie Highway and Ridge Road will remain open throughout construction.  Access to local traffic and parking for all businesses off of Dixie Highway and Ridge Road will remain open at all times.
Harwood Avenue Drainage Project Continues
The improvements to Harwood Avenue from Klimm Avenue (just south of 183rd Street) to Birch Road continue.  Improvements consist of of new storm sewer installation, sidewalk repair, asphalt removal, sod installation and pavement marking. Access to local traffic and parking for all businesses off of Harwood Avenue will remain open at all times.
Any questions regarding these projects should be directed to the Homewood Village Engineer, Max Massi at (708) 206-3470, mmassi@homesweethomewood.com
Only Two More Sticker-Free Pick-Ups
For 18 years, the Village of Homewood budgets for a complimentary leaf pick up service to eliminate the need for residents to use yard waste stickers when disposing of leaves during the fall season. The remaining two sticker-free Wednesdays for the entire Village are November 19, and November 26. All scavenger and recycling questions should be directed to Homewood Disposal at 798-1004.
Pursuit of Economic Development Continues
In mid-October Village President Richard Hofeld, Village Manager Mark Franz, Community Development Director Bill Ernat, and Village Planner Beth Barron attended an International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Deal Making Session at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago. They met with developers, retailers, and brokers on the status of ongoing projects as well as to discuss potential projects in Homewood. While the economy continues to go through a slow period, village representatives were encouraged by the amount of interest still being shown in Homewood.
Thanksgiving Reminders
  • Village offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28, reopening on Monday, December 1 at 8 AM.
  • Monday and Wednesday garbage service will be on schedule.  Thursday and Friday service will be delayed by one day for that week only.  Please direct garbage service inquiries to Homewood Disposal: 798-1004.
Click-or-Ticket Enforcement: November 14-30
Starting Friday, November 14, Homewood Police Officers will conduct Seat Belt Enforcement Zones throughout the Village. The Illinois Department of Transportation has funded a grant that allows increased enforcement of the Primary Safety Belt law. Homewood Police will be taking a zero tolerance approach to motorist and passengers that fail to buckle up. Also, children must be placed in proper safety seats.
For many non-safety belt users, and especially young people, the threat of a ticket has proven to be a greater incentive to buckle up than the threat of injury or death. The goal of Click It or Ticket is not to write tickets, but rather to save lives. The Homewood Police Department will focus on safeguarding the motoring public buy decreasing traffic fatalities and injury through voluntary compliance with Illinois safety belt and child safety seat laws. The Click it or Ticket Thanksgiving Day enforcement period runs from November 14th through November 30th.

Fire Department Public Education Programs
If you have children in Homewood schools,  rest assured they will be prepared if ever in a real fire situation, thanks to the public education programs of the fire department. The engine company and the ambulance crew made eleven appearances at nine preschools and day care centers, in a program geared toward three to five year olds. Over 350 preschoolers practiced "Stop, Drop, and Roll", saw a firefighter in full turnout gear, and had an opportunity to ask questions about the firefighting equipment.
The fire department also visited all the schools in town: St Joseph School, Homewood Community Academy, Willow School, Churchill School, and the 5th graders at Millennium School. All Homewood third graders had the opportunity to go through the Fire Department smoke trailer and practice exiting from a smoke-filled room via a window. All Homewood 5th graders attended an assembly on simple first aid techniques.
By the end of November, over 1,900 Homewood children will have received a fire safety message from the fire department in an effort to expose the children to firefighters and fire equipment so they will be less afraid if ever involved in a real fire situation.
Rotary Club Promotes Literacy
Members of the Rotary Club delivered 838 dictionaries to all the third grade students in public and private schools of the Homewood, Flossmoor and Glenwood area. In conjunction with Rotary Clubs around the world, this is just one of the Rotary projects designed to promote literacy. Rotary members assembled at the schools, handed out dictionaries and showed each student how to use them. The students also learned about the Rotary's, "Four-Way Test" - the set of standards by which Rotarians live their lives.
Students sent thank you notes to the members of the Club:
"I really appreciate my dictionary. I think it will help me a lot with the learning process."
"I love the dictionaries. Now I can see where my Dad is." (written by a child whose father is in the Armed Forces, serving overseas).
"The dictionary you gave me is amazing! It has all sorts of cool info about the world and our Country."
For more information about Homewood Rotary and many of their community service projects, please contact Homewood Rotary President, Cheri Vana at 708-323-3544. The Homewood Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 12:15PM at Calumet Country Club.
Bi-Weekly FAQ
Question: Does the Village have an electronic waste recycling program?
Answer: We have received several inquiries from residents looking to properly dispose of computers, printers, televisions, and miscellaneous electronic equipment.  We are currently interviewing companies that collect and recycle e-waste.  In April, at the "Go Green Day" event, the Village introduced its desire to connect with eco-minded residents and discover solutions together on ways to reduce waste, conserve energy, and sustain natural resources within the Village of Homewood. Eco-minded residents are encouraged to email their "green practice" suggestions to Dennis Leaks, Administrative Intern for the Village Manager's Office.
Green Living: Tips for Staying Warm this Winter
Insulate your attic. It is relatively easy, yet very cost-effective, to add insulation to your attic. The Department of Energy (DOE) suggests a minimum attic insulation level of R-38 (R-value is a measure of resistance to heat flow), equivalent to 12 to 15 inches of insulation. The DOE provides a map on its website that lists recommended insulation levels for U.S. climates.
Seal air leaks. Weather stripping, door sweeps, window shrink wrap, and other materials can be purchased at your local hardware store for $50 or less, and can save you as much as 10 percent in energy costs. If you have an old fireplace, consider installing glass doors (which can cost a couple hundred dollars or more) to help prevent heat from escaping out the chimney when not in use.
Seal heating ducts. Leaky ducts from forced-air or heat pump systems can allow up to 20 percent of the warm air to escape. While most ductwork is hidden in walls and floors, you can seal duct leaks on your own in attics, basements, or garages, and in areas where ducts meet floor or wall vents. The DOE estimates that sealing leaky ducts can save you up to $140 annually.
