Halloween Safety Tips
The Police and Fire Departments want you to have a safe and happy Halloween this year. Please keep in mind a few simple safety rules:
-- Costumes should be short enough so as not to trip the wearer, and should be light in a bright color so motorists can easily see them.
-- If store bought costumes are worn, they should be marked "flameproof". This applies to masks, wigs and beards.
-- Homemade costumes should be treated with a solution of borax and boric acid to enhance their flame retardant qualities. This treatment should not be relied upon completely to prevent costumes from catching fire. Children should always keep a good distance away from any sparks, open flames or intense heat.
-- Flashlights, not candles should be used to light pumpkins or accessories carried by children. Lighted candles used indoors for decoration can be hazardous. The use of light bulbs should likewise be avoided near all decorations.
-- Examine all treats before allowing children to eat them. Only give or accept tightly wrapped or packaged candy.
-- Suggested Trick-or-Treat hours in the Village of Homewood are 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Welcome, INXS International, Inc.
The Village of Homewood is pleased to announce the newest tenant to Prairie Lakes Business Park.  INX International, a division of Sakata Ink, held their grand opening this past week. They are located at 1000 Maple Avenue.  INX International produces water-based inks that are used for packaging.  Some of their clients include McDonald's and Campbell's Soup.
The grand opening included a ribbon cutting ceremony, a tour of the renovated facilities, and a luncheon.  The Homewood facility replaces outdated facilities in Elk Grove Village (IL) and Kalamazoo (MI). INX International had representatives from Japan, the Czech Republic, Italy, California, and Michigan in attendance at the event.  Representing the Village were Village President Richard Hofeld, Community Development Director Bill Ernat, Village Planner Beth Barron, and Economic Development Committee members Marcia Nicholson and Tom Tomaszewski.  The Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce was also represented by Executive Director Todd Beele and Administrative Assistant Kathy Nussbaum.
Sticker-Free Leaf Pick-Up
The Village of Homewood budgets for a five-week complimentary leaf pick up service to eliminate the need for residents to use yard waste stickers when disposing of leaves during the fall season.  Although biodegradable bags are still required, this represents a significant cost savings to residents in disposing of leaves.  This is the eighteenth year this program has been funded by the Village. The five sticker-free Wednesdays for the entire Village are, October 29, November 5, November 12, November 19, and November 26. All scavenger and recycling questions should be directed to Homewood Disposal at 798-1004.
187th Street Repaving Project
The repaving project of 187th Street between Riegel Road and Halsted Street is underway. The contractor has started with the curb and sidewalk removal and replacement. This phase is expected to be completed within one week. Once the concrete work is complete, the roadway will have the top 2" of asphalt removed. For questions about this project, please contact Public Works at 206-3470.
Fire Department News
Firefighter/Paramedic Tom Gaskin recently completed the 40-hour Rope Operations course and received State Fire Marshal certification. Tom is a member of Homewood's Technical Rescue Team, and this is one of the required courses for participation in the program.

The Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team successfully completed their annual validation exercise in early October. All teams must validate their members annually, to remain active in the Combined Agency Response Teams (CART) program. Firefighter/Paramedics Tim Cameron, Jason Presnak, Tom Gaskin and Matt Moran are Homewood's team members. The day began with a 100-question written test covering the four disciplines in rescue: Trench, Confined Space, Vertical, and Structural Collapse. All four team members passed easily, and then completed a confined space scenario, rescuing two downed water plant workers. A twist was given, in that they were told the last rescuer out had collapsed, and needed rescuing. The entire team worked very well together and accomplished all their objectives quickly and safely. They are once again cleared to respond anywhere CART is cleared to respond. This validation exercise was Gaskin's first and , unlike many first-timers, he passed easily. Congratulations to all the team members.

The Fire Department is visiting Homewood schools and pre-schools again this year, in observance of Fire Prevention Month. Grade-specific fire safety and injury prevention lessons are presented to the students, and include a firefighter in protective gear, escaping from a smoke-filled bedroom, Stop, Drop and Roll, emergency first aid and home hazard prevention. Fire safety questions can be answered by calling the fire station at 206-3400.
Geocache Workshop: November 1
The Heritage Committee will host a workshop on November 1 for residents interested in learning about geocaching.  Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasures using GPS.  The committee believes this is a great hobby and a way for friends and families to get outdoors and learn about local history.  Expert geocachers will conduct the workshop.    The workshop will be held in the Village Board Room from 10 AM to noon on Saturday, November 1.  This event is free.
