Summertime Fun in Homewood
Cook County Medication Take-Back Program
Protect your personal information when disposing of prescriptions. The label on a prescription bottle shows confidential personal data - including your name, your doctor's name, the number of refills allowed and the date of the current refill. In the wrong hands, this information could be harmful to you or a drug abuser.  That makes it critical for you to black out your personal data on the label before you dispose of unwanted or expired medication. Use a permanent black marker to cross out any personal data, from the name of the drug to  your address and doctor's name.

FREE Safe Medication Drop-Off for Expired or Unwanted Meds

The drop-off is from 8 AM to 1 PM in the Metra parking lot in Midlothian (148th Street, one block east of Pulaski Avenue).  For more information, contact:  Cook County Department of Environmental Control at (312) 603-8127, or email rakers@cookcountygov.com.

National Night Out 25th Anniversary
On Tuesday, August 5, the Homewood Police Department will partner with Target to host National Night Out. This event provides Homewood residents an opportunity to meet the police officers who serve and protect this community.  National Night Out will be held August 5 at Irwin Park from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.  Come out Tuesday night for activities, giveaways, and dinner for a $1.00 (hot dog, chips, and soda).  Click here for the event schedule.
Red Dots on Trees
In order to expedite ash tree removals during the winter, red dots have been painted on the curb side of ash trees. These dots may be found in the areas of Dolphin Lake, Homewood Estates and Governor's Park, and allow Public Works staff to monitor the progress of removal.  The removal of diseased ash trees is a result of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation.  Read more.
For tree removal and EAB inquiries, contact the Landscape and Maintenance Division of Public Works at 206-3396.
Sanitary and Watermain Relocation Survey
The Department of Public Works is conducting a comprehensive survey to evaluate the feasibility of a major sanitary and watermain project for streets west of Walts Grocery Store and east of Cherry Creek Shopping Center. The project is being evaluated to mitigate the backyard flooding issues of these properties.  This is only a survey; the preliminary step to determining if this type of project can be executed.  If the project were to be scheduled, construction would not take place for two to three years.  If you have any questions, please contact the Public Works Department at 206-3470.

Fire Department News
State Fire Marshal Technical Rescue Awareness certificates were received recently by Fire Lieutenant Bill Wright, and part-time firefighters Michael McAvoy and Stefanie Nolen. Congratulations!

On Monday July 7, the James Hart Pom Pom Squad conducted their fundraiser carwash behind the fire station and, according to their coach Eileen Verde, "It went fantastically. We just love being at your facility. We really had a great time." Although a bit overcast that day, they were able to raise almost $600 for equipment. About 22 girls participated and washed approximately 100 cars.

This year's Independence Day parade was a wonderful event, with beautiful weather and many entries. Fire Department secretaries Debbie Jones and Suzanne Grohe handled the behind-the-scenes details, coordinating entries and the line-up order, and making sure all was in place for the big event. Perennial Parade Marshals Tom Michalski, Jeff Mikes and Don Craemer - all former Fire Department members - made sure the parade entries were in their proper positions at the starting gun. The Police Department and Public Works crews handled traffic and people control along the parade route. This year's line-up was a good-size, with about 55 entries, from the opening group of emergency vehicles (Homewood, Flossmoor, Glenwood, East Hazel Crest and Thornton), to the Brownie troop at the end, and everything in between. The seven childrens  decorated bicycle contest winners received a total of $260 in prize money, with the top bike owner receiving a cool $100. All decorated bike entries received a $3.00 coupon for a Dairy Queen treat.
