Impaired Driving Not Tolerated!
This July Fourth holiday, additional police officers will be working overtime to ensure Homewood's streets are safe.  July Fourth is one of the year's most dangerous days on the nation's roadways due to impaired driving.  Nationally, in 2006, 27 percent of all drivers involved in traffic related crashes during the Fourth of July holiday period (6:00PM FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 2006 TO 5:59 AM WEDNESDAY, JULY 5, 2006) possessed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher.  In Illinois, 66 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes during the last 5 July 4th holidays.  Statistics say 36 of these fatalities resulted from crashes involving a drinking driver.  Last year in Illinois on July 4th, four people lost their lives on Illinois roads.  Two of those fatalities involved a drinking driver.  NHTSA reports that young males, ages 21 to 34, are most likely to be involved in automobile crashes, to drive while impaired and to be among those least likely to wear their safety belts.  But alcohol-related crashes-and fatalities-can be prevented. Designating a sober driver before the July 4th party begins is just one of several easy steps to remember to help save lives.  The message is simple - You Drink and Drive. You Lose.  Play it Safe - Designate a Sober Driver Before the Parties Begin.

Dialing 9-1-1 from Your Cell Phone
When dialing 9-1-1 from your cell phone, knowing where you are is the single most important piece of information the call taker needs.  If you're not familiar with your surrounding when you call, take note of landmarks such as buildings, businesses, water towers or street signs.  Understand you many not go directly to the center you need right away, but odds are they can directly transfer you.  Excerpt taken from The E-Com Dispatch (Summer 2008. Vol. 2, Issue 1)
