Fire Department: Medal of Valor Recipients |
|
Four of Homewood's firefighters were honored this month by the Office of the State Fire Marshal for their actions at a fire last year, which resulted in the rescue of a fellow Homewood fire fighter. FF/PMD John Elashik, P-T FF/EMT Matt Cervak and former P-T FF Mike Turner were awarded the Medal of Valor, and FF/PMD Matt Moran was awarded a Certificate of Recognition. The presentations were made in Springfield, at the 15th Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighter Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony. In April 2007, the department responded to a MABAS Box Alarm request by the Flossmoor fire Department, for a house fire on Dixie Highway. The Homewood engine company was assigned to interior fire attack, and Elashik, Cervak, Turner and Acting Shift Officer Tom Gaskin made entry into the structure, which was under construction, while Matt remained outside and operated the engine. During the course of firefighting operations inside the house, the company was advancing through heavy smoke along a second-floor balcony/walkway, when Tom fell from the walkway, onto the first floor, narrowly missing an opening in the floor. Elashik, Cervak and Turner immediately went to Gaskin's rescue and removed him from the building, with Moran assisting at the front door. Tom was transported to the hospital, where his injuries were treated, and he has subsequently returned to work. For their actions in rescuing Tom, these four were recognized by their Illinois fire service peers. Congratulations to John, Matt, Mike and Matt!
