News from Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce Exectuives |
OklaTreasures is a new Oklahoma initiative, based on the Handmade in America project in North Carolina http://www.handmadeinamerica.org/
The Oklahoma program is inventorying artists who would be willing to be included in a statewide database of our artistic talents. I'm learning "Artists" in Oklahoma can mean a lot of things including traditional painters, chainsaw sculptors, novelists, poets, actors, storytellers, quilters, wheat weavers, cake artists, hot rod customizers and so many more.
The survey will be used for three primary reasons -
- Artists will be included in a database to be hired for fairs, festivals, classes, art shows, etc.
- Artists will be encouraged to form co-op galleries to fill rural downtown buildings.
- Artists will be selected to be included in rural tourism trails, showcasing (and selling) their work.
Click here for the Artist Survey.
Why care?
- This is rural economic development. The North Carolina system produces $172 million. The North Carolina tourism trails have built thriving retail areas in communities of 400 people.
- This influx of tourism dollars and the resulting sales tax has bolstered their primary jobs as well as allowed for fundamental improvements at the schools, parks and other public facilities.
- Tourism and the OK Arts Council are putting together the preliminary trails, now. Artists and communities included will have marketing and numerous opportunities for promotion.
- This is an opportunity for individuals to have the quality of life they want where they want to live.
Oklahoma Exposed is a brand new project being coordinated by the Oklahoma RC&Ds with partners like Tourism, Commerce, the Historic Society, Arts Council, OSU and many others. Oklahoma Exposed will be a trade show/fair/festival to be held at Harn Homestead, OKC, May of 2009. If you crossed the Wildlife Expo with the OKC Arts Festival, you might have the right vibe. Music-Food-Fun!
Communities will have the opportunity to showcase their local attractions, goods, and talents. Basically, each community will partner with local museums, agtourism, b&bs, MIO producers, etc and have a trade show type booth showcasing those things. Like the Wildlife expo, booths will be required to have some kind of activity, some free food, make a rope, draw a picture, something. Again, the focus is at generating interest in touring rural Oklahoma. Kansas has a similar festival www.kansassampler.org.
Right now, they are looking for people to volunteer to be committee chairs and members (children's activities, logistics, food, Made in OK, outreach and promotion, financial, entertainment, media, volunteer coordination and several others) There will also be many spaces available for people who want to come and volunteer for the day.
This is a rare chance to be part of the first year of a new Oklahoma tradition. Please call or email me if you are interested in joining one of the committees. A good cross section of people who are old pros and people with new ideas is needed.
What's next!?!
· Distribute the Artist's Survey to local groups and individuals who might participate.
· Get the Surveys returned to Stacy Cramer, OK Dept. of Commerce at Stacy_Cramer@odoc.state.ok.us or Melyn Johnson, OK Dept. of Recreation and Tourism, Melyn@travelok.com. Volunteer to help with Oklahoma Exposed!

Oklahoma Film & Music Office
Film Location Request |
The Oklahoma Film and Music Office is looking for a film location for an independent film that would like to shoot in early spring/summer.
What they are looking for are a motel and a diner that can either be part of the same building, or separate, but the diner needs to be next door the motel. They both need to be out by themselves, looking isolated and desolate. The person at the motel needs to be able to look across the street and not see a whole lot there. They need to be able to feel alone. That's all the information he has about the location right now.
If you have anything like that in your community, would you please call or email Dino Lalli at the Oklahoma Film and Music Office. He can be reached at 405-230-8443 or dino@oklahomafilm.org. At some point, he will need to have digital photos taken of the location and emailed to him, if he is unable to get them himself. If you have any questions, please call Dino and he'll be happy to answer them for you. Thank you very much for your help. He looks forward to hearing from you. |
Year to date, the WBC has trained/counseled 467 entrepreneurs, and 18 Biz Connection Workshops were held. Visit our website, www.ruralenterprises.com for upcoming WBC events, and to register online for each event! | |
