Greetings!
Looking back, the HNBF has enjoyed an exceptional year of fulfilling our mission to deliver quality programming and empower the Hispanic community through education. Our base of friends and supporters has grown and our reach has expanded into new communities around the country. To close out the year, we enjoyed a strong 4Q with our programmatic schedule that included a securities enforcement law class at the FIU College of Law. We would like to extend a special thank you to our friend and colleague the Honorable Luis A Aguilar, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner who opened the semester long course and delivered the keynote address during the welcoming reception at the FIU College of Law. We also send many thanks to Dean R. Alex Acosta and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Law José Gabilondo for their continued support of the HNBF.
As we approach the end of 2010, the Board of Directors and staff of the HNBF would like to thank all of our friends and sponsors for supporting us and making this another productive year of continued growth and excellence for the HNBF. Indeed, the talent and commitment of my colleagues on the HNBF board is the engine that has moved the HNBF to new heights over the last several years. We are proud to continue building on the solid foundation of our long-standing history of serving the Hispanic community which spans over two decades. We are already hard at work planning for another successful year and are looking forward to bigger and better accomplishments in 2011. Stay tuned!
We wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!
Mayda Prego

HNBF Hosts Securities Enforcement Law Class at the Florida International University College of Law
| |
The HNBF recognizes that Latino law students must be exposed to influential Latino lawyers as they prepare for their careers in the legal field. "We need to advance Hispanic lawyers in areas of the law which are not normally the traditional route for first-generation lawyers. Promotion of justice in the Latino community also includes the financial markets and securities regulation," said Marlon Paz, HNBF board member. That's why the HNBF is proud to partner with the FIU College of Law to offer the Securities Enforcement Law Class.
Students of the Securities Enforcement Law Class are taught by high level practitioners in the securities field on reporting requirements, investigations, regulation compliance, SEC subpoenas for documents and testimony, SEC examination programs, securities litigation and other specialized areas working with diversified industries and corporations. This course also highlighted current topics such as regulatory responses to and precipitators of Ponzi schemes.
"The Hispanic National Bar Foundation is proud to be a part of the leadership dedicated to offering such a cutting edge course at Florida International University. The HNBF is committed to leading lawyers into various areas of the law who possess the talents and promise to flourish in the legal profession," said HNBF President Mayda Prego.

Who inspired you as a youth to stay in school? Go to college? Earn a degree? Pursue your career aspirations? Today, you can be that source of inspiration and support for a youth through your financial contribution to the HNBF. Your support benefits Hispanic students from across the nation--many from high risk situations. The students pictured above all participated on scholarship in our Law Camp program. Your contribution can make all the difference in a young person's life. As a contributor, your investment would support the following programs: Future Latino Leaders Law Camp, Law Fellows, Securities Enforcement Law Class, Project Access Mentorship, and College Scholarships.
Since its founding 25 years ago, the HNBF has engaged, empowered, and supported Hispanic youth because they believe that knowledge and diversity benefit everyone. Lack of opportunities, role models, information, and financial support prevent many Hispanics from becoming leaders and contributing their voices on issues that affect our communities. The HNBF provides diversity pipeline programs to inspire and encourage young Hispanics to pursue careers in the legal profession. The HNBF provides the tools and resources necessary to ensure full and equal opportunity for Hispanics to become leaders in the global community, thereby ensuring a brighter future for all.
