The Big Freeze Followed by the Spring Thaw! Greetings!
Could you believe how cold it got last week? It was 18 degrees - did you read that right? - 18 degrees in Salem. Although we may have to put on more layers, put more fires in the fireplace, and crank up the heat, the vineyards are doing fine. They lay dormant and usually don't mind really, really cold winters. It kills the bugs and other little irritants to a vibrant, healthy vine in the spring and summer. So REJOICE! The 2011 vintage will soon take on its characteristics for us to ponder and wonder.
So, cheers, to you as we await the mysteries of the vineyard!

Let's just get right to it and tell you about the wines we have for sale this month. Some of my favorite local wineries are offering great prices on some of the most drinkable wine out there. Abacela is a wonderful producer out of southern Oregon. I have highlighed one of my favorite whites (a Spanish Albarino) and a 375 ml Port. If you like Port, you'll love the deep, dark, rich Port made by Abacela. If you like stainless steel fermented chardonnay, the Chehalem INOX is stellar! This is a wine that is totally food friendly - just the right amount of acidity to pair well with those hard to pair rich foods that need the acidity to let the food shine through. A to Z produces a red blend that is fruit driven so easy to drink on its own - but pair it with some ripe cheeses, figs and proscuitto and you've got a winner. And the price is beyond reasonable!
I've only highlighted a couple of wineries so check out all of my selections and give me a call with your order. Ciao!

Cellar Select News ~~
As the first year of Cellar Select draws to a close, I am very excited about the response from my customers - you! I have a very fun event planned for my Cellar Select members on Saturday, April 16th. Won't you join us?
I have a arranged for a private tasting and tour scheduled at Couer de Terre Vineyard hosted by Scott Neal, resident winemaker and vineyard manager. CdT wines are some of my favorites. Founded in 1998 by Scott and Lisa Neal, Coeur de Terre vineyard specializes in producing estate grown Pinot Noir from their vineyard located in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range. They do it all~~they live on the estate, planted the vineyard, farmed the land and make the wine so we can enjoy wines that are a true expression of their work and the varietal presented. Don't let the words Pinot Noir scare you! They also have an amazing Rose, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and sometimes a little Syrah!!
We'll gather in the mid-afternoon and share some delicious wines, hear Scott's story, and taste to our heart's content, pairing his wine with a selection of heavy appetizers. Scott has also extended to all members at the event a 10% discount on all wines purchased on April 16. And that, my friends, is a another great reason to be there!
For those interested in joining, here is a chance to receive a selection of wine from a number of different wineries, rather than wine from just one winery 3 or 4 times a year. It is so fun to find those little treasures to share with you. Plus you receive personal invitations to our private Special Events, like the one scheduled on April 16. Here are the options available to you:
White Select: An all-white 3 pack of wine. $40/every 3 months
Red Select: An all-red 3-pack of wine. $45/every 3 months
Barrel Select: A Selection of 2 whites and 2 reds. $60/every 3 months
Won't you join us on the 16th? E-mail me today

This Month's Special Wines
Valentine's is behind us so it's off to St. Patty's Day - and my good friend, Pat Nelson's birthday, by the way! Weddings are coming, birthday celebrations (yes, my daughter's 40th is this year!), and all eyes are turning toward spring outings. Here are a few excellent value priced wines for you to consider packing in that picnic hamper, giving to someone for their birthday celebration, taking to a shower buffet. Ponder these ~~
3 Stones 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough N. Zealand):
Moderate intensity of fresh grass, lime leaf and kiwi fruuit aromas with some citrus zest. Dry, crisp and medium bodied with a moderate concentration of flavor. A suggestion of sweetness, this wine has a medium-long finish.
Our Reg Price: $17.00 Sale Price: $ 13.80
J. Lohr 2009 "Southridge Vineyard" Syrah (Paso Robles):
Absolutely one of my favorite AVAs in California. Paso Robles is the home of some incredible syrahs and this one does not disappoint. This vineyard is on a south facing hillside, resulting in fruit with intense flavors. Dark garnet color with rich, ripe aromas of blueberry and black tea framed by a bouquet of hazelnut, cocoa powder and brown sugar. Flavors of Blackberry fruit and dark chocolate opens up in the glass - did I say delish?!?
Our Reg Price: $15.00 Sale Price: $ $12.50
Abacela 2006 Port (375 ml):
Their dessert style wine was crafted from five of the traditional Douro wine grapes. This opaque wine has aromas of raspberries, dried cherries, plums, cocoa, and exotic spice. Fine grained tannins create a thick, rich texture and a lengthy finish. Cellar for a decade plus. Pair with baklava or aged pecorino Romano with Clementine jam. - the winery
Our Reg Price: $22.00
Sale Price: $17.50
