Sineann Wines by Peter Rosback
Wine Buys - November 2010
Sineann by Peter Rosback
People can't get enough of Peter Rosback's really big red wines. They make pilgrimages to the small barn that is his winery, where he climbs up, around, and over barrels like the athletic soccer fanatic he is. His crew is super loyal - he has a lot of volunteers, people who love his wine and work the harvest just to be around the scene.

This is Peter's domain.

Since his first commercial wine, the 1994 Sineann Old Vine Zinfandel, Peter Rosback's enthusiasm has been as huge as his wines' massive flavors.

Peter's Old Vine Zin comes from a source that no one would have expected. Loni Wright, a motorcycle enthusiast and farmer, has a small vineyard, called The Pines, near The Dalles, on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge. He and Peter became friends over their mutual love of motorcycling.

Lonnie's vineyard was not supposed to be a place where grapes would grow and make good wine. But Peter tried, and the 100+ year old Zinfandel vines were a find that put Sineann on the map.

This week, Peter released the new vintage of his Old Vine Zinfandel. He also got his second glowing recommendation in a month from Wine Spectator. Two weeks ago, Harvey Steiman wrote about Peter's Resonance Vineyard Pinot noir 08, giving it 94 points.

Yesterday, Wine Spectator's Harvey Steiman selected Peter's Abondante Red Wine 08 as one of a small group of Washington Reds he recommends. He gave it 92 points.  It's partially made from The Pines Zinfandel. In the true Peter tradition, it's BIG, and as one of his least expensive red wines, it's a bargain.

Peter has his own style in more than wines. Visiting the Sineann "tasting room", you walk into what used to be a closet, contemplate a long line of bottles next to the sink. Most have inky red stains down their sides - the same red spills over the table and floor. Pick your pleasure - and hope your taste buds hold out long enough to get through the whole shebang. No where to sit, tubes and jars and empty bottles and tools and... you get the idea.

This is very limited production wine so if you'd like to try this wine, let me know soon.  I'll do my best to score you a few bottles.

Greetings!

What a difference a year makes!  I re-read my Thanksgiving newsletter from last year and was gently reminded of all the blessings that have accrued to me this past year.  The holidays last year are somewhat of a blur yet each day now brings a sense of joy and gratitude.

I feel so lucky to have found a "passion" business that feeds my senses to such a high degree.  We all have a passion -- what's yours?  For me, to spend time with family and friends, sharing stories of this past year, dreams of days to come, and thankfulness for the "now" is about as good as it gets!

You, yes you, I'm talking to you and thanking you for the choice you make when buying wine to call me and ask me to find it for you or to take advantage of my pricing and availability.  It is exactly what I had envisioned in 2005 when I launched this little passion business.  Thank YOU for all you have done to keep me going, even in a down economy.

This month I am featuring several Oregon wines - with great variety - that I think would go superbly with your holiday meal or the meal of your host/hostess.  Check out the selection and then give me a call or e-mail me with your choices.*  As with all deep post offs, the availability is somewhat limited.  Delivery guaranteed before Thanksgiving.

May this be  a very festive time of year for you and your family.

Cheers!

Panther Creek - 2008 Chardonnay (Elton Vineyard).  An unoaked chardonnay, this white wine is all about the fruit--floral and tropical aromas of green apple, kiwi, melon and lemon zest. Bright acidity with apple and pear flavors, followed by a crisp finish of mineral, wet stone, and flint.  Definitely not your big California Chard.  Yum!  Reg. Price $18.00; Post-off - $15.00

So, my fail-safe Thanksgiving wine tip is to put out a bubbly, a white, a red and a rose and let everyone mix, match and help themselves. It's fun and a great way to experiment with new taste combinations.  From my family to yours, a very happy and delicious Thanksgiving!

And You're the Reason Why....

My goals has always been to find great wine at a good price delivered with personal service - something that is hard to find these days.  Custom Wine is a relationship business, and I appreciate the relationship you and I have developed over these last few years.

And to show my appreciation, this month if you choose to join Cellar Select wine club and receive quarterly shipments of delicious wine at affordable prices, or if you are currently a member and refer someone who joins Cellar Select, your next quarterly delivery (January 2011) will be half price - that's right, half price!  There's no better time!

Happy Thanksgiving!
