End of Vintage Wine Values - New Wines on the Horizon
The Word on End of Vintage Wines

 Portland, OR - August 25, 2010

So, Fall 2010 is breathing down our collective necks ~~ we can feel it in the air.  The leaves are starting to circulate with the breeze, the mornings are cooler, the sun takes longer to show it's shining face.  But Fall is always an exciting time around the valley.  Veraison (the turning of the grapes to the distinctive color of the varietal) will soon be taking place.

Another reason to celebrate is the amazing values on wine you can find as the older vintage takes a back seat to the vibrant flavors of the next vintage.  This Wine-O-Wednesday features some incredible wines that are too hard to pass up.  The downside is limited availability....so if one or more of these wines tickles your fancy, don't delay.  I really can't promise they will still be here a week from now.

And, by the way, I am taking a long-awaited vacation from September 2-10.  So, if you really must have some wine, I understand.  Otherwise, I'll be back up and running as of September 11.  I'll look forward to hearing from you then!

Aloha!

Pork Tenderloin with Mustard Sauce*

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 3 pork slices, about 3 tablespoons sauce, and about 1/2 cup noodles)

Ingredients

  • 2  cups  uncooked medium egg noodles
  • 1  tablespoon  olive oil
  • 1  (1-pound) pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut crosswise into 12 (1-inch-thick) slices
  • 1/2  teaspoon  black pepper
  • 1/4  teaspoon  salt
  • 1  cup  dry white wine
  • 3  tablespoons  whole-grain Dijon mustard
  • 2  tablespoons  water
  • 2  teaspoons  cornstarch

Preparation

Cook noodles according to package directions, omitting salt and fat; drain.

While the noodles cook, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle the pork with pepper and salt. Place pork in pan; cook 5 minutes, turning once.

Combine the wine and mustard; pour into pan. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Remove pork from pan; keep warm.

Combine water and cornstarch in a small bowl. Stir cornstarch mixture into pan; bring to a boil, and cook 1 minute or until thick. Serve pork with sauce and noodles.

Enjoy with a Cold Crisp Chenin Blanc!

Last Year's Vintage*:

Domaine William Fevre Chablis 2006
: close-out $20.00/btl, Regular $32.00/btl. 4cs, 1 btl available. 89 points Robert Parker, this wine will never be this price again! Highly recommend. 2008 will arrive early September, at $27.00.

Hahn Pinot Noir, Central Coast CA 2007: close-out $8.10/btl, Regular $12.25/btl.  14 cases available.  Always reliable winery, from mainly estate fruit in Santa Lucia Highlands appellation.

Suavia Soave Classico 2008: lower price ~~ $14.25. Four cases available. 2009 is expected to arrive early September, at $17.00.  Four daughters now run the estate, located at the very top of the hill of Soave looking down at most other Soave Classico producing estates. This is the ONLY producer whose wines are all DOCG quality level. Soil is volcanic ash, super minerally-driven Soave Classico.  One of my favorite food-friendly whites.

Some recent press:

Katherine Cole Food Day August 17th:

Miguel Torres Chile Las Mulas Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, Curico Valley CH 2009  $10.40/bottle. Made With Organically Grown Grapes.

"I profiled Miguel Torres Maczassek of Miguel Torres Chile back in May; his new Las Mulas organic label has just arrived in Portland. Named after the mules that work in the farms and vineyards of the Chilean countryside, this delightfully bright blanc is fruity rather than herbaceous, with notes of pineapple, grapefruit, lime and litchi. A sure hit with cold seafood, and a bargain at this price.

Miguel Torres Manso de Velasco, Curico Valley CH 2006  $41.00/bottle. Made from 100+ year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

"From a 100-year-old hillside vineyard in Chile, this inky-purple wine is extraordinarily rich and dense-you could almost eat it with a spoon-and yet for all the power, it has balance and an earthy component that keep it interesting sip after sip. Great juice-I couldn't stop drinking it even though I tasted it at lunch after six other wines.
