Summer is Finally Here!!
Greetings!
....and with it comes outdoor entertaining, family reunions, camping trips, invitations to barbeques, picnics and anything else that allows us to be outdoors. It was amazing last week to watch the mass exodus of folks on their lunch hours hanging out with friends or colleagues at the various small parks around Portland. Have you checked out the new Director's Park across from the Paramount Hotel? It's wonderful. I had the pleasure of sharing a table with a woman from The Netherlands who is visiting for three weeks while she is trained in a style of dance, yoga and self-expression -- "Nia" ( www.nianow.com) -- which originated in Portland but has worldwide connections. It is that very spirit that makes Portland such a fantastic place to live and work.
I hope you get a chance to really enjoy the myriad of opportunities Portland has to offer outside, especially as the Fourth of July approaches.
Cheers! |

Word has it that upwards growth in the Washington wine industry may be drawing to a close, with the number of bonded premises dropping to 591, two less than last quarter. While many wineries have weathered the economic challenges, the dust is starting to settle as vintners decide to shut tasting rooms or close down altogether.
Corporate heavyweight Diageo is closing the tasting rooms for Canoe Ridge and Sagelands later this month while Seattle-based Precept Wine Brands is reducing production at their Alder Ridge facility. Diageo and Precept are large conglomerates with wine portfolios of many core brands in Washington so they are attempting to streamline and economize, being more strategic in their wine operations. Smaller, independent wineries continue to see their tasting rooms as a way to connect directly with their customers and promote direct to consumer sales, so they are reluctant to close their doors. This is true in Oregon as well.
If you haven't been to the Yakima Valley or the Walla Walla areas for a long weekend of delicious wine tastings, be sure to have that in your plans this summer. Call ahead and secure a reservation for those hard-to-get-into wineries. Although the economy has definitely affected the industry in Washington, it is still worth the drive as the wine coming out of these regions is stellar - especially for those of you who like the "big red" or "full bodied whites." |

Featured Wines for July 2010*
Couer de Terre 2009 Pinot Gris: On the nose, the wine expresses vibrant tropical notes including pink grapefruit, passion fruit and guava. These lush tropical flavors then yield to a vibrant core of bright acidity that allows the wine to finish with great length and will make this a good wine for sipping or with foods such as shellfish and soft ripened cheese. $16.00/bottle
Three Stones 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough): An absolutely stunning dry white wine from New Zealand. Zesty flavours of passion fruit, gooseberry, and crushed lime, with green straw hues, the wine finishes with a crisp refreshing acidity. $13.00/bottle
R. Stuart & Co. 2008 Pinot Noir: Rich chocolate, dark berries, fragrant new cherries and sinfully creamy texture. How delicious will this be with duck pate, fresh figs and goat cheese. Wait, another idea - invite friends for fondue!
$15.00/bottle
DeStefano 2005 Meritage (Red blend - Woodinville, WA): Bordeaux blend full of robust flavors. Lots of black berries, blueberry, caramel and spice. Delicate aromas of violet and sweet cigar balance and undertone of dusted earthiness. The palate is alive with juicy berry flavors and wooded spice, leading to a long, toasty finish. $20.00/bottle
J.K. Carriere 2009 "Glass" White Pinot Noir: A lazy summer evening patio is the perfect place for the aptly named J.K. Carriere "Glass" Willamette Valley White Pinot Noir. Yes, white Pinot noir, or rather, an utterly dry and serious rosé. It's fashioned in the manner of a turn-of-the-century rosé Champagne with no bubbles, a slight spritz and a luscious ripe sip-of-summer taste. This truly is one of my very favorite summer wines. $19.00/bottle
Penner-Ash 2008 Rubeo (Pinot Noir-Syrah blend): Aromas of black cherry, bramble and black pepper. A fruit-forward, yet structured and textured palate of black plum and currant finishing with wood vanillas and spice. May sell out! $18.60/bottle
Natalie's Estate Rock Horse Ranch 2007 Stable 39 (red blend): Dark cherry with hints of mineral and spice on the nose. Rich dark red fruits on the palate with nice structure along with balance of tannins and acidity with a lingering finish. $18.50/bottle
