Wine-O-Wednesday Returns!
Portland, OR - April 28, 2010
The much anticipated Wine-O-Wednesday returns this week with some amazing wine values and a few tidbits of news in the local and national wine scene. With great values like today's featured wines, you can afford to add a few bottles to your "cellar", knowing that good weather is just around the corner and friends are going to be stopping by or events planned that require a chilled bottle of white or a smooth bottle of red to be on "standby!"
I hope you enjoy this issue. If there are topics you'd like me to cover, please write me! I can't seem to keep my nose out of the vineyard so would love an excuse to do my research!
Cheers! |

Vineyard News
The historical three-tiered distribution system is once again in the news. High courts around the land are facing the legal question of whether this system infringes on free trade. As you can imagine, wineries and breweries are fighting hard to overcome this obstacle so they can advance the concept of direct sales to consumers. In today's economy, and today's over supply of wine, it is essential that wine be allowed to "flow" freely to those over 21 without the added percentage the wholesalers and retailers like to charge it's customers. Two-thirds of all direct to consumer sales flow out of the tasting room. It makes sense when you think about it. This number has increased to 66 percent so far in 2010 from 59% in 2009, while e-commerce sales have fallen. In other words, in order to "get the best deal," you need to actually be at the winery--which isn't always convenient. Should the high courts throw out the three-tier system, consumers may find the price of their favorite brew, wine or bubbly to drop as the "add on" percentages are no longer required to be part of the equation. We'll see..... |
