Are you ready for Summer?

Remember to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA and UVB. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours and after toweling off. Also, wear a hat and sunglasses. Did you know that the sun's rays are less harmful before 10 AM and after 4PM? Try to plan your outdoor activities so that you aren't out while the UV rays are at their peak. Seek the shade when possible and wear a higher SPF sunscreen in the summer months.

When Should You Use Sunscreen?
Using sunscreen is not always a day at the beach. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 80 percent of sun exposure occurs with everyday activities such as riding in a car or doing yard work.
Cloudy days don't necessarily offer protection, either. Eighty percent of the sun's rays can penetrate light clouds, and even fog - two very common weather conditions in the Northwest!
Also, if you are going to the beach, don't count on that beach umbrella to protect you from the sun. The culprit is not the quality or positioning of the umbrella, but rather the tendency of rays to reflect off the sand and reach your skin. Concrete, snow, water and other reflective surfaces can also affect your skin.
The best defense against the sun's rays is to stay on the offense by using sunscreen daily, ideally a zinc oxide containing sun block SPF 15 or higher. One of our most popular sunblock is ColoreScience powder SPF 30 or 50. |
