Photodynamic Therapy
Targeting Pre-Cancerous skin lesions and Acne

Years of fun in the sun take their toll on our skin, often resulting in scaly red or brown areas known as Actinic Keratoses. The lesions are annoying and unsightly, but more importantly, they can lead to skin cancer. Approximately 10% of these lesions go on to become squamous cell carcinomas. Treatment options in the past have been cumbersome, requiring weeks of topical chemotherapy creams and resulting in crusting red skin. Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT, has made the treatment of actinic keratoses much easier for patients to tolerate, while still targeting the visible and the invisible actinic skin lesions.

PDT involves the application of a photosensitizer, Levulan, which incubates on your skin for an hour or so. Then, it is "activated" by exposure to Blue Light and sometimes IPL or intense pulsed light. This process kills the precancerous cells, and can also be used to improve the appearance of brown sun spots, sebaceous hyperplasia, facial redness and acne. The process of PDT kills the bacteria that cause acne, as well as targeting the overactive sebaceous glands.
