 Don't Sweat it

 

 
With summer, comes heat. That can be an embarrassing combination if you experience severe underarm sweating when traditional topical therapies haven't worked.

By the time you receive this enewsletter, I should be settled into the routine at our makeshift hospital in Tlaola, Mexico. I have been inspired by stories that so many of you have shared with me about similar adventures that you have enjoyed. I look forward to sharing with you when I return.

The proposed schedule is breakfast at 6:30 am and lights out at 11:00 pm, with clinic and OR time sandwiched in between. So it looks to be a pretty full schedule. The excellent planning and organization denote the years of experience this group has had doing this work. I just hope I don't get in the way of this well-oiled machine.  

 

A two and a half day drive from San Antonio, our destination is a small village in the mountains at @ 4,000 foot elevation. The scenery will be at once spectacular and humbling, as I anticipate the extreme poverty afflicting many in the area.   I have been reflecting on the contrasts between our plentiful society and the simplicity of needs in this village. That thought pattern was magnified when I sat in the dark with a patient last week during an unexpected power outage affecting my office building and the adjacent hospital complex. Unable to do any procedures, schedule appointments, check email, make a phone call (for but an hour!), I pondered what it must be like to live like that for a life time.  I have been inspired by so many of you who have regularly "given back" and do so unselfishly and with a glad heart. I am happy to join you in this endeavor.
