Acne: A Challenge at Any Age
Almost every teenager has an occasional acne lesion (whitehead, blackhead, pimple or cyst). Some of us have a much bigger problem with acne, and the treatment is a challenge at any age. Though teen-onset acne typically resolves on its own after several years, it may persist into the 30's or 40's. Some patients develop acne for the first time as an adult. Although acne is not a life-threatening condition, it is a significant problem for many teens and adults and may lead to scarring.
Acne is caused by the obstruction of sebaceous glands in the skin. The glands produce sebum and if the gland is obstructed, a comedone (whitehead or blackhead) develops. An infected pustule may then develop due to the presence of a common skin bacteria, Proprionebacterium acnes, which is found in hair follicles. Acne treatments usually target one or both of these issues. The challenge is that a treatment that helps one person's acne problem may not work for the next person. And, any skin care regimen or treatment plan may take 6-8 weeks to show improvement. So, treating acne requires patience.
Tips for acne skin care:
1. Cleanse with cleanser, or a mild acne soap.
2. Do not aggressively clean or scrub your face--this may exacerbate the problem
3. Exfoliate with a glycolic or salicylic acid product, or with benzoyl peroxide or a retinoid on a daily basis. (or consider a series of glycolic peels, microdermabrasion or our new Vitalize peels).
4. Protect your skin from UV damage. Many patients with oily or acne prone skin feel that sunscreen will aggravate acne. If you share this concern, try a zinc oxide powder sunblock, such as Colorescience Sunforgettable with SPF 30. Look for noncomedogenic skin care and makeup products.
4. If simple measures fail to control your acne, you may consider topical or oral antibiotics when you see your physician.
5. Photodynamic Therapy with the Blu-U may be an option for you
6. It is always wise to eat a well-balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, but generally food choices are not responsible for acne.
7. Wash your hands before touching your face and Do NOT pick at your blemishes. This aggravates scarring.
