Antioxidants for Your Skin
Prevention
One of the most effective anti-aging regimens is to use a broad spectrum sunscreen and a topical antioxident. Enviromental exposures, such as UV light, smoke, and air pollution cause chemical reactions in your skin resulting in oxygen free radicals. These oxygen free radicals can cause a myriad of skin problems, from wrinkles and sunspots to loss of collagen and skin cancers. Certainly, a diet rich in antioxidants is good for your body, but certain topical antioxidants have been shown to work in your skin to neutralize free radicals and enhance the protection that your broad spectrum sunscreen offers.
You may be familiar with SPF or Sun Protection Factor, but now you should also consider EPF when evaluating your skin care products. EPF, or Environmental Protection Factor, is the measure of effectiveness of a given antioxidant. For example, 1% Idebenone, found in Prevage MD, has a rating of 95 EPF (out of a possible 100 points).
