December 2011

Greetings!

Wow, it seems like this season went by so fast!   I hope you had as much fun as I did.  Although, I'm already looking at how I can make next year better and improve even more.  I guess there's always a new goal waiting to be achieved.

At season's end Midwestern Council re-evaluates our competition rules; refining, adding, and removing as needed.  These changes are voted on at the December board meeting.  Special Awards will also be voted on that night, as well as the clubs choosing their events for next season.  If you'd like to weigh in on any of these, you can plan to be there on the 8th or discuss with representatives from your local club before then.

I hope you're planning to attend the 2011 MCSCC Awards Banquet to be held at Country Springs Hotel-WaterPark-Conference Center in Pewaukee, WI on January 14th.  Links for hotel & dinner information are to the right.  Dinner reservations are due by December 31st, and reserve your room by December 15th to secure event pricing.  I really enjoyed the 2010 banquet & look forward to knowing more people in attendance at this year's!

Congratulations to all of our 2011 Class Champions, and also to the drivers that set new track records!   Good Job!

Big thanks to everyone that made our events happen this year.  It's your dedication, effort, and (especially this year) fortitude that makes our events possible.  Special thanks to CSCC & staff for putting on another great That Loooong Race.  The extra activities for kids reinforce our family-friendly identity & provide great memories for all involved.

I hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving, without injuring yourself too much at the dinner table; and I wish you a Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas.

Until we race again,

Michele Salamun

Race Staff Corner

The 2011 racing season has come to an end and each and every member of our Race Staff should be very proud of the contribution they made this year. This was a transitional season for us as we recruited and trained new members and drew upon our experienced team to dedicate themselves to a busy schedule.

What is most interesting about our Race Staff is finding out more about their individual backgrounds and the reasons why they enjoy this aspect of racing. The most common factor is a love of racing and a desire to be a member of an exceptional team that quickly becomes a group of life long friends.

Our vision for Midwestern Council is to grow our Race Staff program as we welcome more new members to our dynamic program that at its core is the safety of our racing family.

We are very grateful for our Race Staff and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season!

Madd Matt   by Lynn Serra

Madd Matt Lagessie, a long-time MCSCC racer, experienced a cardiac event while competing in the Vintage/Historic group during That Loooong Race.  Matt was air lifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital where he spent about 2 weeks in the ICU, during much of which he was under heavy sedation.  Not even Bob Currey sneaking in a cold beer could wake him!

Matt is now at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale, room B138 (http://rmlspecialtyhospital.org).  This place is well known for obtaining positive outcomes.  His room is full of drawings his kids made (girls ages 10 and 13), photographs like the ones I brought in from the last enduro, cards, and a plaque from Jared Cromas.

Matt is able to open his eyes, move his arms and head, and, per Al Houston (Volvo guy), squeezes your hands really hard.  He is able to sit up in a special chair and receives physical and speech therapy.

Obviously, he can hear everything you say.  If I had a nickel for every time I heard Al or Rob Fike curse in there I could afford a new racecar; but that stimulates Matt and the doctors want Matt to stay stimulated to improve his chances for recovery.

Matt's recovery is going to be a long one.  He and his family need a lot of support now. There are a number of things you can do to help:

  • Donate now.  We all need to help them out now.  Please send donations to:

Lynn Serra

18902 Righeimer Road

Harvard, IL 60033

Make checks out to Simone Lagessie

Please send your donation before December 15th to be included in a mass "MCSCC donation"

  • Go visit Matt.  You don't have to stay long. Read Autoweek or another magazine to him, bench race, go with another racer and just talk about racing or diving.  Did you know Matt was a certified diver?  Perform range of motion exercises on Matt if you are trained - it is important to keep his joints limber.
  • Bring food, gas cards, or magazines to leave in the room.
  • Send a get well card.
  • Offer to do something around the house e.g. rake leaves, clean gutters, etc. - contact lynnellynserra@att.net if you have something in mind.  I'm sure it is difficult for his wife of 18 years, Simone, to cook, get the kids to their activities, and do all the things around the house that Matt would normally do.
  • Pray for healing for Matt and strength for his family.

Nancy Harlan Update

On December 2, 2011 at approximately 8:45 am Nancy Harlan entered a plea of guilty in Milwaukee County Court to the charge of Theft (Embezzlement) (Value Exceeding $10,000). Sentencing will take place on February 9th, 2012 and should follow the terms of the plea agreement which is 4 years imprisonment (18 months initial confinement with 30 months extended supervision) and full restitution.

Nancy was a trusted individual within Midwestern Council for over 25 years, but over her last seven years with the organization she managed to embezzle all of our funds and left us on the verge of bankruptcy. One year later we are now financially stable and looking towards the future with great expectations!

Some people may wonder why we would make this information public since it was and is something that is so difficult, frustrating, time-consuming, and embarrassing? The reason is; because the same thing can happen to you. I talked to an extraordinary amount of people over this past year who said the same thing happened to them, but you never hear about it until it happens to you. The reason this happens is because organizations cover up fraud and pass problem people on to others because they do not want to deal with the embarrassment of having it happen to them. It is even worse in the case of non-profit organizations who rely on donations from others to operate. In the case of Midwestern Council we wish to take a stance and tell others that this happens more then you think and share our experiences with them.

I encourage anyone with questions about how to prevent embezzlement or how to go about checking for embezzlement to contact me offline and I will help the best I can.

Thank you,
Chuck Cassaro

Trick or Treat Report
Another successful Long Race has come and gone.  The weather cooperated and we had a GREAT showing for the Trick or Treat activity on Saturday.  The kids looked great and it certainly looked like they were having fun.  We'd like to thank all of those who helped chaperone the kids and provided candy.  Thanks to Chicagoland Sports Car Club for providing the Trick or Treat bags.  We'd also like to thank Lindstrand Motorsports (LMI) for providing most of the goodies distributed to the kids.  Much appreciated!  A special thank you as well to Gary Schneider & Gretchen Patey who once again provided the Trick or Treat transportation.  They have provided their extra-long trailer for several years which has now become a very familiar site on Trick or Treat day.  Thanks for the extra effort to bring it down each year!!

Big Wheel Race a Success
Now that I've completed my first leadership role for the Big Wheel Race, there are several people I would like to thank because without them the event wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as it was :)
  • Patti Martin - she'll back next year in her "official" capacity
  • Sarabess Boldt
  • Nancy and Romayn Rote
  • Reeta Sandsnes
  • Dewey Reeder
  • Robin and Chris McNicol
  • Gail Woelfle
  • Patti Green
  • Safety and Rescue
  • And last but not least, Chicagoland Sports Car Club and the kids.  Without them it wouldn't happen!!

Ronda also forwarded a great letter & picture from Bill Dentinger:

Nov. 11th, 2001

Hi Ronda,

Just a quick note before any more time goes by to let you know what a great time my guests and I had at That Loooong Race event again this year. All aspects of it were great, and a good time was had by all.

I think you know that I am a big, long time fan of the Big Wheel Races. They were always the highlight of my grandchildren's lives in the 1980's and 1990's. They are all in college now, but to this day, all I have to do is look at them and say, "Blackhawk Farms Raceway" and their eyes light up.

The last couple of years my niece's children (toddlers) have been attending, and they have become BIG fans. I thought you'd enjoy this picture. From the right, that's Celia who has a little too much class to work up a sweat during her race. Her little sister, Josie, has just learned to walk, but does not realize that she's not very good at it. She has so many clothes on she could hardly move. Next to her is cousin Cole, the most professional of the group. He finished Third in his very competitive race. He should have finished 2nd, but Uncle Bill had told him not to crash into anyone, so he eased up at the end and a little girl went shooting by him like he was standing still. Finally, there's C.J. He's wearing gloves that are way too big for him, but he won't give them up. They look like Uncle Bill's racing gloves and he can wrap them up over his sleeves like Uncle Bill does.

Ronda... we had a ball. Thank you AND CLSCC!!!
